Three More Italian Swimmers Qualify for Paris Olympics on Day 2 of 2024 Sette Colli Trophy

2024 SETTE COLLI TROPHY

Three more Italian swimmers likely punched tickets to the Paris Olympics next month with their performances at the 2o24 Sette Colli Trophy on Saturday.

Viola Scotto di Carlo blasted a huge lifetime best in the women’s 100 butterfly to add her name into Italian Olympic consideration right before Sunday’s deadline. She reached the wall in 57.87 for 3rd place, dropping more than half a second off her previous-best 58.49 from last summer to sneak under the Olympic ‘A’ cut of 57.92.

Both Giacomo Carini (1:54.34) and reigning Olympic bronze medalist Federico Burdisso (1:55.20) cleared the Olympic ‘A’ cut of 1:55.78 in the men’s 200 fly en route to a 1-2 Italian finish, but only Carini will head to Paris next month since Alberto Razzetti already qualified in the event. Carini dropped almost a second off his previous-best 1:55.17 from the 2022 European Championships while Burdisso was about a second off his personal-best 1:54.28 from the 2021 European Championships.

Luca de Tullio threw down a personal-best 7:45.80 for 2nd place, likely qualifying for the Italian Olympic roster under the qualifying time of 7:51.65. The 20-year-old shaved almost a second off his previous-best 7:46.52 from the 2024 World Championships in February.

Italian swimmers previously had to hit qualifying times even faster than the Olympic standards, but now they will be nominated with Olympic ‘A’ cuts in events where free slots are available.
