St. Bonaventure Finishes Strong at Zippy Invite

WOMEN

The St. Bonaventure women’s swimming and diving team concluded the Zippy Invite in good fashion, placing fourth overall in the nine team meet with 1017.5 points at the Ocasek Natatorium on Sunday (Dec. 8).

The Bonnies finished just behind the University of Toledo who took third with a total of 1353 points. Illinois State, who led the meet for all three days, placed first with a total of 1550.5 points.

Sophomore Alexa Scanlan began the day for St. Bonaventure in the preliminaries of the 200 yard backstroke, touching in at 2:06.72 which was good enough for eighth place. Scanlan was followed by sophomore teammate Adelyn Graf who took ninth in the event, registering a time of 2:06.80. Scanlan also placed eighth in the finals of the event with a time of 2:07.32, while Graf would go on to take tenth place in the event with a time of 2:05.07.

Four Bonnies saw a top ten finish in the preliminaries and the finals of the 200 yard butterfly. Freshman Tanja Kirmse took first place in the preliminaries and the finals, recording a time of 2:04.19 in the prelims and then beating her prelim time by almost two seconds in the finals with a time of 2:02.71. Junior Aly Paz placed fifth in the prelims of the event with a time of 2:06.57 and then grabbed an eighth place finish in the finals, recording a time of 2:07.72. Sophomore Elizabeth Malone posted a time of 2:07.21 in the prelims and then improved her time by three seconds in the finals, registering a time of 2:04.46 and finishing in third place. Junior Lauren Caldwell touched in at 2:07.71 which gave her a fifth place finish in the preliminaries of the event and she would later take sixth in the finals of the event with a time of 2:06.28.

Shannon Haberman and Erin Cervone concluded the top finishes for the individual events, coming in fourth and tenth place respectively in the 1650 yard freestyle. Haberman would register a time of 17:22.21 and Cervone would record a time of 17:33.34.

SBU concluded the day with the 400 yard freestyle relay where they saw two teams place in the top ten. The team of Tanja Kirmse, Rachel bull, Maggie Woods, and Shannon Haberman took sixth in the event, with the final swimmer coming in at 3:33.22. Their counterpart team consisted of Jeanette DietrichBridget JordanRachel Bantelman and Taylor Anderson who placed tenth in the event, registering a time of 3:37.06.

The Brown and White return to the pool after the winter break on January 18th when they travel to Binghamton to take on the Binghamton Bearcats.

MEN

The St. Bonaventure men’s swimming & diving team finishes on a high note but comes up short as they finish with 1725.5 points, which was good enough for second place just behind Bloomsburg University.

Vatslav Lets continued to show his dominance as he clinched the top spot in the 200-yard backstroke by touching in with a time of 1:48.76. Lets finished with more than a second and a half to the next swimmer.
Viacheslav Shchukin and Jimmy Martin helped the team by scoring a combined 60 points in the 100-yard freestyle.  Shchukin would notch himself a first place finish, a pool record and a meet record by finishing with a time of 43.66. Martin shortly followed Slav by stopping the clock at 45.25, good enough for second place.
In the 200-yard breaststroke, freshman Preston Schilling earned the Brown and White 26 points by finishing in fourth place with a time of 2:09.26.
In the 38th event, Matthew Rochna (1.53.26) won the bronze in the 200-yard butterfly losing to the second place winner by only 7 tenths of a second and the to the first place finisher by 16 tenths of a second.
With the longest held race of the day, Gregg Byrne earned a third place finish for the Bonnies.  He came in at 16:20.33 in the 1650-yard freestyle.
The Bonnies would be able to finish on a high note in the final race of the day when a team of Michael Pilyugin, Lets, Martin and Shchukin broke the meet record in the 400-yard freestyle relay by coming in at 3:00.91. Less than nine seconds later a relay team of David PaccapanicciaRipley DannerMike Burud, and Alex Szakelyhidi would finish third (3:09.05).
The Brown and White are off until January 5th when they compete in the NTC Classic against Gannon University, Lynn University and Notre Dame College.
