Sophia Fanshaw Commits to D3 Carroll University to Bolster Backstroke Group

Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

High school senior Sophia Fanshaw has committed to swim at Division III Carroll University. There, she’ll join older sister Grace Fanshaw, who will be a senior next season.

The Fanshaws are from Whitewater, Wisconsin, which is only about a 45 minute drive from Carroll’s campus in Waukesha.

Sophia represented Whitewater High School at November’s Wisconsin Division II State Championship Meet, where she led off her team’s 9th place 200 medley relay. Division II in Wisconsin is for the state’s smaller high schools.

That was second first State Championship experience – she swam the leadoff leg on Whitewater’s 6th-place 200 medley relay as a sophomore in the fall of 2018.

Best Times in Yards:

  • 50 free – 26.84
  • 100 free – 58.31
  • 200 free – 2:04.41
  • 100 back – 1:02.08
  • 200 back – 2:13.38

Carroll did not have a scored conference championship meet in 2021 amid the pandemic, but the CCIW did have a championship meet that recognized individual achievements.

Sophia Fanshaw joins what was arguably the best backstroke group in the conference last season, led by seniors Lindsey Coons (#1 in the CCIW – 57.70) and Jordan Andrews (#6 in the CCIW – 59.50).

After the graduation of the top 3 backstrokers from last year’s roster, Fanshaw’s arrival comes just in time. She’s 12 seconds faster than the school’s next-best returning 100 backstroker from last season.

That was all under the tutelage of new head coach Guy Gniotczynski.

The same story is too in the 200 back, where every swimmer who raced a 200 back for Carroll last season was a senior. Fanshaw’s best time in that race would have ranked 8th in the CCIW last season.

Fanshaw says that in addition to the opportunity to swim with her sister, acceptance into the Direct Admit Program for Physical Therapy made the decision to attend Carroll easy for her.
