Shaine Casas is showing a new side of his swimming, earning middle lanes in the ‘A’ finals in the prelims and going on to also win the final. This morning he earned the top seed swimming 24.93. He only went faster tonight with his 24.23 to break Hunter Armstrong‘s PSS record of 24.30.

Historically, Casas has struggled in the preliminaries, and has missed the ‘A’ final a number of times and then turned around and gone an exceptionally fast time to win the ‘B’ final. In both of his events this morning he qualified in the top three, easily securing a spot in the ‘A’ final, and he still swam faster at night. We saw this new side of him appear at the Olympic Trials last summer, when he qualified 2nd for the final in the 200 IM, and he is continuing this trend.

Casas’ time tonight was just off his lifetime best in the event of 24.00, but it was his 2nd fastest swim ever in the event.

He also won the 100 free just a few events earlier, coming in at 48.31 to win the event by two tenths of a second.
