The Sacred Heart University swimming and diving team turns its attention to the Northeast Conference Championship this weekend. On the heels of a program-best dual meet campaign, the Pioneers are optimistic about the four-day championship, hosted February 15-18 at MIT in Cambridge, Mass.
“We have swum well all season and I am looking forward to seeing this team in action at NEC’s,” said third-year head coach John Spadafina. “They have put in a tremendous amount of work throughout the year and are excited to perform well.”
SHU posted a 9-2 dual meet record this season, including a second consecutive win over crosstown rival, Fairfield and the first-ever win over Holy Cross.
The Pioneers set three school records during the season, all during the winter ECAC Championship, where the team placed third. Along the way SHU broke 10 pool records at their home facility, McCann Natatorium, and broke a nine-year old mark in 200 freestyle relay in the dual meet at Fairfield.
The Championship begins on Wednesday with the 200 medley relay and 800 freestyle relay, with an 8 p.m. starting time. Trials begin Thursday morning at 10 a.m. as well as Friday and Saturday, with the 1,650 preliminary heats for the Pioneers beginning at 4:20 p.m. Finals sessions are in the evening and begin at 6 p.m.
