The Canadian 4 x 100 relay final featured a pair of 16-year-olds, Taylor Ruck and Penny Oleksiak, both of whom scored their very first Olympic medals with the relay’s third place finish tonight.
The duo formed the back half of the Canadian bronze medal 4 x 100 free relay, with Ruck splitting 53.19 and Oleksiak splitting 52.72.
They were also the only under-18-year-old swimmers of tonight’s medallists, scoring their country a secure first place spot on our 18-and-under medal table.

*note: since there were two 18 and under swimmers who earned medals on the Canadian relay, we will be counting this relay as two medals, although the relay bronze only counts as one medal in the real medal count.
18U Medal Lookout for Tomorrow:
- 16-year-old junior world record and Japanese national record holder Rikako Ikee comes into the 100 fly ranked third with her 57.05 from tonight. However, the final will be very competitive. World record holder Sarah Sjostrom of Sweden (55.84) and Emma McKeon of Australia (56.81) already sit ahead of her, and close behind is defending Olympic champ Dana Vollmer (57.06).
- Also in range of an Olympic 100 fly medal is sixth-seed Oleksiak, who swam 56.73 in the prelims and 57.10 in finals. It could very well become a double-teenager medal stand, but they will have to overcome the world record holder, the defending Olympic champ, or both.
