How It Happened
Juniors Maddie Tetreault and Hannah Benavides both won two events to lead Rhode Island to a victory at Siena in the season opener for the Rams Saturday.
After Siena opened the meet with a victory in the 400-yard medley relay, Tetreault led a 1-2-3 URI finish in the 1000-yard freestyle race. Tetreault finished in a time of 10:53.58 and was followed to the wall by freshmen Addi Wood (10:57.12) and Cate Carboni ) 10:59.96.
Tetreault later added a win in the 200-yard backstroke. Her time of 2:12.14 had her well ahead of Siena’s Carsyn Ide (2:13.08).
Benavides dominated in the 100-yard breaststroke, recording a time of 1:06.55. She was more than three seconds faster than second-place Audrey Shultz from Siena, who had a time of 1:09.37. It was the same result in the 200 breaststroke, where Benavides was well ahead of Shultz, beating her by 2.15 second for the victory.
Standouts From the Pool
- Rhode Island won nine individual events out of the 16 that were held.
- Divers Lily Hsu and Olivia Winslow finished 1-2 in the 1-meter dive, than traded places in the 3-meter dive. Carleigh Schlissel was fourth in both events for URI.
- Sophomore Rylee Kelly was the winner on the 500-yard freestyle, beating Siena’s Hope Ivanovich by more than four seasons. Kelly added a second-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle.
- Freshman Julianna Tyler out-touched Ivanovich in the 200-yard butterfly. In her collegiate debut, Tyler had a time of 2:08.23, just ahead of Ivanovich (2:08.62) in an exciting finish.
- Tyler later added a second-place finish in the 200-yard individual medley.
- Sophomore Ella Hacker and junior Jackie Triglia provided URI with a 1-2 finish in the 100-yard butterfly. Hacker was the winner in a time of 59.26 seconds, and Triglia was right behind in 1:00.53.
What’s Next
Rhode Island is off until Saturday, Oct. 28 when it hosts a tri-meet with Springfield College and Coast Guard. The meet begins at 12 p.m.

Siena Swimming & Diving started off the day with something to celebrate in its 2023-24 home opener at the Siena Swim Center on Saturday. The Saints (1-1) battled Atlantic 10 Conference foe Rhode Island to a 167.5-132.5 loss in their annual Breast Cancer Awareness meet and the first of four home events this season.
LOUDONVILLE, NY – The Green and Gold kicked off home action with their first pool record of the year, with the team of freshman Carsyn Ide, senior Audrey Shultz, freshman Hope Ivanovich, and graduate student Rory Kalac turning in a time of 3:59.14 in the 400-medley relay to break the old pool record of 4:00.96 set by Saint Francis (PA) in 2012.
Siena claimed seven event wins overall, while URI emerged victorious in the other nine, including both the one-meter and three-meter diving events.
Reigning MAAC Swimmer of the Week Ivanovich followed up a three-win collegiate debut by taking first in the 200 free (1:57.92) and second in the 200 fly (2:08.62) and the 500 free (5:17.72). Classmate Mea Amedio just missed out on a Program Top Ten time with a win in the 100 back (1:00.16) and also took home a win in the 200 IM (2:14.20) by 22-hundredths of a second.
Kalac took control of the sprint events with wins in the 50 free (24.60) and 100 free (53.58). The Saints closed out the meet with victory in the 200 free relay via the team of junior Shaylea Triller, freshman Natalie Blume, freshman Camryn Raines, and Kalac swimming a time of 1:40.13.
Siena’s fall season continues on Saturday, October 21 when the Saints head west to face MAAC foe Canisius and the University of Rochester in Rochester, New York.
