Records Fall At Purple-Gold Intrasquad Meet

Five East Carolina University swimmers combined to set seven individual meet records at the annual Purple-Gold intrasquad scrimmage at Minges Natatorium Friday evening. The exhibition meet serves as the men and women’s teams lone trial run for the upcoming 2013-14 season, which gets underway Oct. 4-5, when the Pirates travel to Greensboro for the N.C. Collegiate Swimming Kick-Off Classic.

Junior Rokas Cepulis established three meet records, smashing one record by over three seconds, eclipsing one mark by more than two seconds and just barely breaking another by three-tenths of second. First he set a new record in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 58.39, .03 better than the previous mark of 58.42. He then recorded a new meet-best in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:05.59, breaking the two-year old record of 2:08.90.

Cepulis broke a 21-year old meet record in the 200 IM to conclude his evening. He finished the race in a time of 1:53.49 to erase the former meet mark of 1:56.20 set in 1992 from the record books.

Senior Attila Kiraly set the meet record in the 200 backstroke (1:52.54) as did freshman Adam Dear in the 200 butterfly (1:53.54).

A pair of individual meet records fell on the women’s side. Sophomore Bailie Monahan posted a new mark in the 200 butterfly and freshman Tori Angermeier established a new record in the 200 freestyle (1:53.00) by 0.12.

In addition to the seven individual records set, a trio of relay records were established.

Angermeier and Monahan were a part of establishing a new meet record in the women’s 400 freestyle relay (3:33.35) along with sophomore Anastasia Amoiroglou and freshman Isabelle Little. Senior Anna Gibas and junior Charlsie Lincoln joined Amoiroglou and Monahan in setting a new mark in the 200 medley relay (1:45.28).

Nikola Simic, Trevor Irish, Bailey Maloney and Michel Dugan teamed to break the men’s 400 medley relay record by nearly three seconds (3:08.59).

“We couldn’t be more pleased at where we are right now,” Pirate head coach Rick Kobe said. “We anticipate having another outstanding season and with all the fast swims today and the 10 records set; we’re well on our way.”
