GERMANTOWN, Md. – Records fell at the 2020 Landmark Men’s and Women’s Swimming & Diving Championship as the first day wrapped up.

The Catholic men’s 200-yard freestyle relay team of George Isaacs, Matthew Mahon, Jeffrey Flores-Schreifer, and Kevin Jay opened the relay championship with a gold medal and new record-breaking time. The team swam a 1:23.78, beating the previous time of 1:23.79 set last year. Another record broken in the 200-yard freestyle relay event with Scranton winning the gold for the second year in a row. The team of Lauren Byrne, Audrey Camp, Liz Howlin, and Amber Diehl set a new championship record with their time of 1:36.36.
In the men’s 500-yard freestyle, Catholic newcomer Ren Prescott won his first-ever Landmark Swimming & Diving Championship gold medal. Prescott touched the wall first in 4:44.14, edging fellow freshman, Susquehanna’s Jayden Corrgian. All eyes were on Drew senior Mal Vishwanath in the women’s 500-yard freestyle, as she holds the current record. Vishwanath didn’t set a new championship record, but she did swim away with the gold, winning the event all four years she has swam at Drew. The senior swam a 5:04.14, nine seconds faster than the second-place finisher.
The 2018 and 2019 Swimmer of the Year, Catholic’s Gregory McCarthy once again won the 200-yard individual medley, racing to the gold in a time of 1:51.82. On the women’s side, Scranton’s Lauren Bryne’s name should look familiar as the junior won the same event last year. Byrne won her second goal medal of the night, her first as an individual in the 200-yard IM. Byrne made a splash, breaking her previous championship record of 2:06.41 by two seconds (2:04.41), earning herself a NCAA B-cut.
In the men’s 50-freestyle, Drew’s senior Jack Mahoney earned a trip to the top of the podium for the second time in his career, swimming a 20.81. On the women’s side, Scranton sophomore Amber Diehl came in first with her time of 24.30.
In the diving well, rookie Robert McHale of Catholic was the gold medalist on the 1-meter board. McHale finished with 393.40 points. Scranton’s freshman Jeanna Gailius was the winner on the women’s 3-meter board. Gailius earned 310.25 points. Tomorrow will feature the men’s 3-meter diving and the men’s 1-meter event.
In the final event of the night, the men of Catholic stood at the top of the podium in the 400-yard medley relay. Schriefer-Flores, junior Chris Grunbrok, McCarthy, and Mahon earned the gold medal with their time of 3:25.72. Scranton foursome of Marycate O’Sullivan, Danielle Pikulik, Byrne, and Audrey Campo won in 3:56.64.
The 2020 Landmark Swimming & Diving Championships continue through Sunday evening. Preliminary events start at 10:00 a.m, while finals begin at 5:30 p.m.
