Unlike the past two days, no new National Age Group records were set on the final day of the Potomac Valley Swimming senior championships meet, but two PVS Open records did go down.
The first event to see a record go down was the men’s 100 free. Former Michigan swimmer Sean Fletcher, swimming for the Mason Makos, swam a 43.19 in finals. That swim replaced Jack Conger’s 43.39 he swam at the 2012 Tom Dolan Invitational as a high school senior as the PV Open mark. Conger still has the PV Resident record, a 42.81 Conger did while swimming at the same Metros meet in 2013 where he broke Jeff Kostoffs’s legendary national high school record in the 500 free. NCAP’s John Shebat, who be joining Conger at Texas next year, swam a personal best this morning with a 45.22, and replicated his time this evening to take second.
Future Cal swimmer Andrew Seliskar set a NAG record in the 400 IM on Friday and in the 200 breast on Saturday, but couldn’t quite go three-for-three.  His 1:42.83 in the 200 IM broke his own PVS Resident and Open records, and obviously was a personal best for him. To set a new NAG he would have had to better new American record holder David Nolan’s 1:41.39 from 2011, which stands both as the NAG and national high school record. Seliskar still trails behind Nolan and Ryan Murphy, whose 1:42.24 he swam in prelims at NCAA’s last year ranks second.
As reported in an interview from this evening, Seliskar was a little rested and partially shaved for this meet. He could still potentially challenge a few records later this month at the NCSA junior national meet, but finals there will be swum in long course, meaning any chances he’ll have for breaking SCY records will have to come in preliminaries.  Shebat again finished in second place, this time with a 1:48.99, almost three seconds slower than the time he swam a month ago at the VHSL 6A North Regional meet.
In the women’s events tonight, Megan Byrnes (NCAP) won a pair of victories in the 1000 free and 200 back. In the 1000 free she was about eleven seconds shy of her personal best, but beat 13 year-old Madely Donohoe (The Fish) 9:51.81 to 9:54.84, a time that is a personal best for Donohoe. Byrnes herself set a new personal record in the 200 back, with her time of 1:58.45 putting her more than a second ahead of second place finisher Lea Gwennap (1:58.99), representing Machine Aquatics. Makos’ Amanda Kendall won her fourth event of the meet with a 48.87 in the 100 free tonight. In second place was 13 year-old NCAP swimmer Katelyn Mack (51.13).
NCAP’s Kylie Jordan took the 200 fly in a time of 1:59.72, finishing over 2.5 seconds ahead of The Fish’s Carol Helibrun (2:02.48). Former WVU swimmer Rachel Burnett, representing Machine, won the 200 IM with a 2:01.99. In second was NCAP’s Hannah Baker (2:03.80). Wrapping up the meet on the women’s side, Snow Swimming won the 400 free relay by five seconds with a time of 3:34.81.
In other results on the men’s side, NCAP swept the top spots in the 1650, with the win going to Lane Stone in a time of 15:39.15. In second was John Surette, finishing in 15:47.35. Machine’s James Murphy, who usually focuses on freestyle, won the 200 back in a new personal best of 1:48.10. In second place was NCAP’s Christopher Murphy (1:49.07). In the 200 fly, NCAP’s Samuel Pomajevich went from third place at the 150 to win the event in a time of 1:50.22, just beating out George Mason’s Matthew Lynch, officially swimming unattached (1:50.59). The men’s 400 free relay was also won by a margin of over five seconds, but this time it was the men of Arlington Aquatics, who finished in a time of 3:09.24.
Bobo does write a weekly column (probably more often) you just have to scroll to the comments section of each article to read it.
Bobo should write two a week, one senior and one age group
I’ve been now totally updated. And yes, I’ve missed a lot of big swimming news this past weekend! WOW!
I try a little recap.
MEN’S PAC-12 CHAMPIONSHIPS
USC won. That’s a little surprising to me but perhaps not for college specialists. Cal well behind but the big meet is in 3 weeks so no panic.
Impressive Quintero with 3 freestyle individual wins. 42.21/1.32.40/4.11.25
Nolan with an amazing 200 IM! I didn’t expect that! 1.40.07! 😯 American and NCAA record! Was he fully tapered for that meet to swim so fast? If yes, why not wait for NCAAs? I know he’s a beast in short course but WOW! He still has everything to prove in long course… Read more »
I’d like to see Bobo with a weekly “column” on swimswam.
