Post Meet Interview with Jack Conger

February 09th, 2013 News

At the 2013 Metro Championships, Jack Conger of Good Counsel broke Jeff Kostoff’s 500 freestyle high school record from 1983. Conger’s 4:13.87 lowered the Kostoff’s 4:16.39 by 2 and a half seconds. As one of our commenters pointed out, Conger’s 200 split in that 500 (1:37.79) would have won and broke the meet record in the individual 200 free event. Leading off the victorious 400 freestyle relay for Good Counsel he broke the Independent High School Record in the 100 free with a :42.81. He also won the 100 back in :46.78 and split a :20.1 on the winning 200 medley relay. Not a bad night for the soon to be Texas Longhorn.

granted a lot is off the angle but am i correct in thinking he didn’t lap anybody in this race? if so . . . that can bode well for middle distance swimming on the men’s side in the NCAA’s for the next few years.

is it just me, or does he seem to start his turns way out? (or was it camera angle?).

I was actually at Metros and have a handful of videos, he does glide into a lot of walls, and you are correct he did not lap anybody.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=SKzYHMAsjgw#!, this is my video of the 500 Free, which is probably a little better and you see the whole field.

No he didn’t lap anyone, I was in the race near the back and I was a few seconds ahead of him at my 450

His stroke looks goofy, though.

Legendary indeed. I am speechless at the trifecta but especially the 4:13, that record could stand for decades like Kostoffs did.
