On each day of the official Olympic torch relay, carrying the Olympic flame to the Olympic cauldron in Rio de Janeiro, the Rio2016 Facbeook page is posting brilliant and spectacular images from one of the world’s unique and most beautiful landscapes. Each day until August 5th, we will bring you these stunning images.
On the 86th day of the Olympic torch relay the torch crossed the border into the state of Rio de Janeiro, finishing up it’s long journey through São Paulo. The torch travelled through a total of five cities on the day, with three of them in the state of São Paulo and two in Rio de Janeiro.
With just over a week until the opening ceremonies, the torch will continue towards the city of Rio de Janeiro where the Olympics will be held (Rio is about 160 km away from Angra dos Reis, where the torch ended today).
The torch began in Taubate, a city that has benefitted by being between the cities of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, the two biggest in the country. This strategic location has helped the city develop greatly. The torch then moved 50 km south east to the city of São Luís do Paraitinga, a major tourist site of the Paraiba Valley region. São Luís do Paraitinga is popular for tourists mainly because of it’s Historic Centre, declared a national heritage site, and it’s Caipira traditions.
The torch headed another 50 km south east to it’s final city of the relay in São Paulo, Ubatuba. Ubatuba is on the south east coast of the country and has over 100 beaches that attract many tourists. It is considered by law the “Surf Capital of São Paulo State”.
The torch then finally made it’s way into the state of Rio de Janeiro, heading 70 km east along the coast into the city of Paraty. Paraty, the southernmost and the westernmost city in the state, has become a popular tourist destination recently for it’s historic town and the coast and mountains it contains. The town is located on the Bay of Ilha Grande, which has many tropical islands, and behind the town things can be found like tropical forests, mountains and waterfalls.
The torch finished the day travelling nearly 100 km along the coast all the way to Angra dos Reis. Also being on the coast, Angra dos Reis is a popular tourist attraction for it’s tropical features like Paraty.
