Ohio State Stays Undefeated With Sweep of Pitt On Senior Day

COLUMBUS, Ohio – It was “senior day” inside the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion on a lovely February afternoon and things couldn’t have gone better: the Ohio State women’s swimming and diving team stayed unbeaten (6-0 in dual meets) with a 202-97 win over Pittsburgh, the men also stayed perfect on the season (5-0) with a 179-121 win over the Panthers and 18 swimmers and divers and their families were honored in pre-meet ceremonies on pool deck.

Those seniors from the class of 2024 recognized included: Janie Boyle, Charlie Clark, Owen Conley, Bob Fick, Maya Geringer, Libby Gilbert, Alyssa Graves, Tristan Harrison, Nathan Holty, Jean-Pierre Khouzam, Pete Krusinski, Mia Lachey, Mario McDonald, Billy Regan, Catherine Russo, Shaw Satterfield, Kyra Sommerstad and KitKat Zenick.

Also recognized were those student-athletes who, because of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, received a fifth year of competition. These swimmers and divers included Hannah Bach, Amy Fulmer, Ruslan Gaziev, Chachi Gustafson, Morgan Kraus, Mo Noaman, Josie Panitz and Lyle Yost.

In the water, the Buckeyes compiled 14 wins on the women’s side. KitKat Zenick and diver Janie Boyle led the way with two individual event wins apiece; Zenick in the 50 and 100 freestyle events and Boyle in the 1- and 3-meter diving events. Zenick posted an NCAA “B” qualifying standard in the 50 free.

Additional “B” standards were set by Josie Panitz (200 breaststroke) and Morgan Kraus (100 butterfly).

Hanna Bach (200 free relay, 100 breaststroke and 400 free relay), Amy Fulmer (200 free relay, 500 freestyle and 400 free relay), Panitz (200 breaststroke and 400 free relay) and Kraus (100 butterfly and 400 free relay) were also multiple event winners for the Buckeyes.

Diver Clay Chaplin led the men’s swimmers and divers with wins on both the 1- and 3-meter springboard events. The Buckeyes, as a team, totalled nine event wins.

Up Next
Outside of nine current and former swimmers and divers competing at the World Championships in Doha, Qatar, the team will be off from competition for two weeks until hosting the Ohio State Winter Invite Feb. 16-18.

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Pitt women’s swimming and diving team put up strong performances in the pool and on the springboards against No. 7 Ohio State at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion late Friday afternoon. The Panthers fell to the Buckeyes by the score of 202-97 in their final dual meet of the season.

Claire Jansen and Sydney Gring helped lead the Panthers, as each swimmer picked up a first-place finish. Jansen finished first in the 200 Back with a time of 2:00.31 and also came in third in the 100 Back with a time of 55.47. Gring won the 200 IM with a time of 2:03.34, while finishing second in the 200 Free (1:51.70) and the 100 Free (51.74).

The Panthers had seven second place finishes against the nationally ranked Buckeyes, as Olivia Yoo swam a 2:04.33 to finish second in the 200 Fly and Jesscia Strong swam a 1:04.55 to finish second in the 100 Breast. Sophie Yendell finished third in both the 50 Free (23.28) and in the 100 Fly (54.43).

The 200-medley relay team of Jansen, Strong, Yendell, and Gring finished second with a time of 1:40.15. Avery Kudlac, Jansen, Yendell, and Tara Culibrk ended the meet with a second-place finish in the 400 Free Relay, finishing with a time of 3:27.24.

On the diving side, Rachel Dickerson finished second in the 3-meter (281.10) and third in the 1-meter. Including Dickerson, the Panthers had three divers finish in the top 5 in the 1-meter – Jess Vega (267.68) finished fourth and Maggie Foley (251.63) came in fifth.

The Panthers travel back to Columbus, Ohio, for the Ohio State Winter Invitational Feb. 16-18 before heading to the ACC Championships. The Championships will be held at the Greensboro Aquatic Complex from Feb. 20-24.

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Pitt men’s swimming and diving team won seven events against No. 14 Ohio State at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion late Friday afternoon. The Panthers fell to the Buckeyes by the score of 179-121 in their final dual meet of the season.

The 200-medley relay team of Krzysztof Radziszewski, Jerry Chen, Dominic Toledo Sanchez, and Stepan Goncharov kicked off the meet with a first-place finish with a time of 1:26.83. Pitt had four individual event wins against the Buckeyes. Radziszewski and Goncharov carried the momentum into the 100 Back, as Radziszewski (47.88) and Goncharov (48.10) took first and second place. Goncharov also came in first in the 100 Free with a time of 44.02.

Jerry Chen picked up two wins in the 100 Breast (54.80) and the 200 Breast (1:58.67). Max Matteazzi won the 200 IM with a time of 1:44.30 and finished third in the 100 Breast (55.69) and Nick Short (2:05.07) also came in third in the 200 Breast. Dominic Toledo had a strong swim in the 50 Free, finishing second with a time of 20.46.

The men’s 400 Free Relay team of Goncharov, Toledo, Guy Frimis, and Radziszewski finished the meet the same way they started by taking first with a time of 2:58.07.

On the diving side, Daley Fraser finished second on the 1-meter and fifth on the 3-meter (377.03). Cameron Cash (390.15) came in third on the 3-meter and Dylan Reed (364.20) finished fourth on the 1-meter.
