Nova S’eastern Women Look to Maintain Lead, Drury Men Look to Take it: DII NCAA Day 2 Up/Downs

2025 NCAA Division II Swimming & Diving Championship

For those unfamiliar with swimming terminology, the concept of “Ups” and “Downs” is a good way to track which teams performed best at prelims. In prelims, swimmers qualify for one of two finals heats: the top 8 finishers make the A final, places 9 through 16 the B final. In finals, swimmers are locked into their respective final, meaning a swimmer in the B heat (spots 9-16) can only place as high as 9th or as low as 16th, even if they put up the fastest or slowest time of any heat in the final.

With that in mind, we’ll be tracking “Ups” and “Downs” after each prelims session. “Up” refers to swimmers and divers in the A final, “Down” to B finalists.

Drury had an excellent morning, putting six swimmers into the 200 IM final who are projected to score a total of 79 points. This event, plus their one swimmers in the 50 free final would put them exactly tied with Nova S’eastern before relays. These two teams are really looking to separate themselves from the rest of the pack today.

These projections are missing the women’s 1-meter diving and the 1000 freestyle, which is being swum as timed finals. Adding those events could impact scores.

The 1000s will help Nova S’eastern and Colorado Mesa get ahead or stay ahead of Drury. Nova has one swimmer in tonight’s heat and one swimmer in scoring position from the prelims heats. Colorado Mesa didn’t have anyone in the top-8 this morning, but they have two swimmers in tonight’s final. Drury doesn’t have any.

Colorado Mesa will benefit the most from diving points with three divers entered in the event today, which could throw them back into contention with the top-two teams, but they have a lot of points to make up.

The Drury men had an exceptional day, putting seven men into the finals with five in ‘A’ finals in their events. This performance is looking like it will vault them ahead of Tampa, who currently sits in 1st overall.

These projections are missing the 1000 freestyle, which is being swum as a timed final. Tampa is the favorite to win the event with Jacob Hamlin as the top seed by almost a second, and as the NCAA record holder in the event. Tampa also had a swimmer finish 1st in the prelims, which will be a lock for a scoring position tonight. Based on our projections, they could also fall behind Indy. This could be an exciting race for 2nd this evening, as an Indy swimmer, Cedric Buessing is seeded just behind Hamlin in the 1000.

There is no men’s diving event this evening, so these scores are likely more accurate than the women’s scores will be.
