Notre Dame Set to Face Virginia

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The University of Notre Dame men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams travel to Charlottesville, Va. this weekend for a head-to-head meet with the Cavaliers. The meet begins Friday, Jan. 8 at 2 p.m. ET with diving (swimming events begin at 5 p.m. ET), and resumes Saturday, Jan. 9 at noon ET.

“We’re swimming against a premier program in the ACC,” head coach Mike Litzinger says. “Virginia is a very talented team, one of the best in the conference, and this meet is a great way to kick off the New Year and begin our work heading into the ACC Championship meets.

“The advantage of both teams competing together is an increased energy level,” Litzinger continues. “The competition between the men’s teams will be close, and on the Cavalier women’s team, Courtney Bartholomew just helped the U.S. set the world record in the 400m medley relay at the Mutual of Omaha Duel in the Pool last month. All of this leads to the men having an opportunity to stand up and compete against a strong team, and the women to take what we worked on in the fall and race well.”

The Irish teams were last in the water at the Purdue Invitational, where the men’s team finished third and the women’s team, second. The Cavalier women are currently ranked first in the CSCAA TYR Top 25 poll, with the men standing 21st. In the Collegeswimming.com polls, Virginia again has the top women’s ranking, while Notre Dame stands 37th. On the men’s side, the Cavaliers rank 15th, the Irish, 39th.

Live stats of the meet will be available through VirginiaSports.com, with daily recaps available at und.com.
