GREELEY, Colo. – The Bears secured a commanding 169-128 victory over Grand Canyon in a dual meet Saturday afternoon at Butler-Hancock Pool.
GCU DUAL
The Bears claimed nine first-place finishes across 16 events, with sophomore Kyra Rabess leading the charge with three individual wins.
Rabess dominated the freestyle events, winning the 1000-yard (10:36.86) and 200-yard (1:51.78) races back-to-back before securing first place in the 500-yard freestyle (5:03.51).
Northern Colorado swept the top three spots in the 200-yard freestyle, led by Rabess. Lora Konter placed second (1:53.12), while Lily Mayer finished third (1:53.64).
In the breaststroke events, Maria Erokhina took first in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:17.73) and placed third in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:04.05).
The 200-yard medley relay A team (Trionfetti, Erokhina, Lombardi, and Simioni) finished second with a time of 1:44.13.
The Bears dominated the butterfly events, with Ellyson Lombardi winning both the 200-yard fly (2:02.04) and 100-yard fly (54.93). Payten Irwin finished third in both events (2:04.95, 56.83).
Martina Yuki Trionfetti secured a victory in the 100-yard backstroke (56.04), while Reese Hazan followed closely behind in third (56.87). Hazan later claimed first in the 200-yard backstroke (2:04.02).
Emma On-The-Hill placed second in the 1000-yard freestyle (10:42.95).
The Bears closed the meet on a high note, with the 400-yard freestyle relay A team (Konter, Lombardi, Rabess, and Trionfetti) taking first in 3:25.90.
On the diving boards, Madison Berg delivered another standout performance, winning the 1-meter event (308.70) and finishing second on the 3-meter (267.90).
“I’m proud of the way our women stepped up as a team today. We had a handful of lifetime best times and the best energy we’ve seen this season,” said Head Coach Lisa Ebeling, “GCU is a strong program, so we need to be diligent in fine-tuning some details if we want to be ready to face them again in a couple of weeks at the WAC Championship. Our races this morning will provide a good confidence boost going into the home stretch.”
DU FIRST CHANCE MEET
Competing in Denver, Gabi Fish placed 13th in the 100-yard freestyle and earned a fifth-place finish in the 500-yard freestyle.
Cheyenna Cordova took eighth in the 500-yard backstroke, while Gracie Moreland placed sixth in the 200-yard backstroke.
UP NEXT
The Bears will shift their focus to the 2025 Western Athletic Conference Championships in Houston, Texas. The four-day meet begins on Wednesday, Feb. 26.

GREELEY, Colo. — The Grand Canyon women’s swimming and diving team fought hard on the road before ultimately falling 169-128 to host Northern Colorado on Saturday.
The GCU 200-yard medley relay opened the meet with a victory, posting a time of 1 minute, 42.59 seconds. The team included junior Marta Guasp, graduate Raphaela Nakashima, junior Paula Martinez Moreno and senior Maria Brunlehner.
Guasp placed second in the 100 backstroke with a time of 56.77 seconds.
GCU freshman Beth Young (1:03.20) took first with Nakashima (1:03.36) placing second in the 100 breaststroke.
Martinez Moreno touched second in the 200 butterfly at 2:03.41, along with a 100 butterfly finish of 55.36 seconds for second.
Brunlehner won the 50 freestyle with a time of 23.85 seconds while also taking first in the 100 freestyle at 51.72 seconds. Chatzi took second with a time of 52.57 seconds.
Lopes senior Fruzsi Macsok closed the 200 breaststroke in 2:19.78 to earn second and followed that performance with a 4:30.85 winning mark in the 400 Individual medley.
GCU senior Aleksandra Wegrzynowska placed second in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:09.76.
In diving, Lopes sophomore Lacey Neighbor won the 3-meter competition with 275.03 points while freshman Brooke Woeslaw placed third with 258.90 points.
Neighbor placed second in the 1-meter competition at 294.60 points.
The Lopes will now put all attention toward the WAC Championships, which will be Feb. 26 to March 1 in Houston.
