SAN ANTONIO – The UNT swimming and diving team competed together for the first time this season and edged out a victory with a 153-145 win over UIW, thanks to some standout performances from both groups.
Diana Kolb, Shaena McCloud, Kailey Turner and Tram Nguyen all had standout performances in the pool, while a trio of divers – Saylor Hawkins, Brigid Krbec and freshman Sydney Guidara – all had strong finishes and earned NCAA Zone cuts in the 1-meter springboard.
“This was a meet that came down to the wire, and our team pulled together to pull out the win,” head coach Brittany Roth said. “We’ve had some battles with illness and injury, and that affected our lineup, but the team was able to pull together and put together some solid performances.”
Kolb won the 100 and 200 backstroke, finished second in the 400 IM and led off the team that won the 200 medley relay. McCloud won the 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly, anchored the runner-ups in the 200 freestyle relay and helped win the 200 medley relay. Turner won the 200 butterfly and the 500 freestyle, and Nguyen showed her versatilty by winning the 200 breaststroke, swimming on the winning team in the 200 medley relay, took third in the 200 butterfly and fifth in the 400 IM.
The divers took the top four spots in both diving events – the 1-meter and 3-meter springboard – led by Guidara, who won the 1-meter in her first collegiate event and took third in the 3-meter, Krbec, who took second in both events, and Hawkins, who won the 3-meter and took third in the 1-meter. Another freshman, Ashley Van Milligan, took fourth in both events.
“The divers did a tremendous job today,” said diving coach Stephanie O’Callaghan. “For being this early in the season, they showed a lot of confidence and a lot of consistency. Huge shoutout to all the freshmen for really getting after it and having a great first meet. Sydney won the 1-meter and got a zone cut, and the fifth years led the team well and came in with strong performances. I’m excited to build off this success as we move into the Houston Diving Invite next weekend.”

SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word women’s swim & dive team narrowly lost the University of North Texas in their first meet in the Ann Barshop Natatorium.
“It always stings to lose such a close battle, but our ladies raced with gusto today,” head coach Reed Robelot said, “We fought hard on the boards too, but sometimes you run out of scorers in the wrong events. Hats off to the UNT coaches and swimmers though. They made it happen in the key moments that earned them the win.”
The Cardinals had several swimmers have great swims.
Ximena Conde Merlos had another great meet. Ximena won the 1,000 freestyle by more than 15 seconds with a time of 10:39.15 minutes. She followed this up by dominating the 400 IM with a time of 4:34.89 minutes.
Hattie Kugler won an exciting 100 breaststroke, which was settled by less than one second, beating out her teammates Gabriella Luna and Imanee yates.
Freshman, Jada Ashford, showed out in her first home meet winning three events. She won the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:57.67 and the 100 freestyle with a time of 52.84 seconds. Ashford closed out the day by leading off the first-place finishing 200 freestyle relay. Her time of 23.9 seconds in the first leg was the second fastest split of all swimmers at the meet.
