Switzerland’s Noe Ponti set a new national record in the finals of the 200 fly. He recorded a 1:49.42, which is 0.39 hundredths faster than his own previous national record of 1:49.81. His previous mark was swam at this meet a year ago in Abu Dhabi when he picked up silver.
Ponti picked up bronze in tonight’s final. South Africa’s Chad le Clos took gold with a new personal best and African Record, while Daiya Seto from Japan took silver. The top three were the only athletes under the 1:50.0 barrier.
Split Comparison:
Noe Ponti – SC Worlds 2022 | Noe Ponti – SC Worlds 2021 |
50 – 24.41 | 50 – 24.71 |
100 – 52.43 (28.02) | 100 – 53.05 (28.34) |
150 – 1:20.71 (28.28) | 150 – 1:21.35 (28.30) |
200 – 1:49.42 (28.71) | 200 – 1:49.81 (28.46) |
Looking at the splits, it’s clear that Ponti’s improvement largely comes from being more aggressive in the front half of the race. The only split that is slower than his performance in 2021 is the last 50, while the first two are significantly quicker.
All-Time Top 3 Performers for Switzerland:
- Noe Ponti – 1:49.42 (2022)
- Jeremy Desplanches – 1:53.93 (2018)
- Nils Liess – 1:55.00 (2018)
Ponti now owns nine of the top ten performances in Switzerland’s history in the event, and is significantly faster than the next best two performers.
