Nitro Backstroker Shannon Bagnal Verbally Commits to A&M for 2021

Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Austin, Texas native Shannon Bagnal has announced her verbal commitment to Texas A&M University for 2021-22. A junior at Vandegrift High School, she is a two-time USA Swimming Scholastic All-American with Winter Juniors or faster times in the 100 back and 200 back. She wrote on social media:

“I am extremely blessed and excited to announce my verbal commitment to swim and study at Texas A&M University. I want to take this opportunity to thank my family, friends, coaches, and teammates for supporting me along this journey. I am beyond excited to be apart [sic] of such an amazing team! Gig ‘em👍🏻”

Bagnal competed as a freshman at the 2018 Texas UIL 6A State Swimming and Diving Championships, coming in 8th in the 100 back (56.21), but she didn’t swim at the 2019 or 2020 high school state meets. She does her year-round swimming with Nitro where she specializes in the 100/200 back. She competed at 2019 Winter Juniors West and earned lifetime bests in the 200 free, 100 back, and 100 fly. At the end of February, she swam at College Station Sectionals (SCY in prelims, LCM in finals). In prelims she tackled the 200 free, 500 free, 100 back, 200 back, and 100 fly. She finaled in the 400 free (40th), 100 back 17th), and 200 back (14th) and updated her PBs in the 500y free and 200y back.

Top SCY times:

  • 200 back – 1:59.67
  • 100 back – 55.60
  • 200 free – 1:52.84
  • 100 free – 53.41
  • 50 free – 24.88
  • 100 fly – 58.32
  • 400 IM – 4:42.50
  • 200 IM – 2:12.01

Bagnal is still a bit outside scoring range at the conference level. It took 53.63/1:56.18 to get a second swim in the backstroke events at 2020 SEC Championships. She will overlap one year with Emma Carlton and two years with Grace Wey, both of whom made the B final in the 100 back at SECs.
