DURHAM, N.H. – The Wildcats won 11 of the 16 events as the University of New Hampshire swimming and diving team defeated America East opponent Vermont, 183-117, in the season opener on Friday at Swasey Pool. The Wildcats start the season 1-0 (1-0 America East), while the Catamounts fall to 2-3 (0-1 America East).

How it happened
  • Freshman Amelia Labno (Rosemount, Minn.) had an outstanding debut, winning two events: the 100 back (58.26) and 200 back (2:05.37).
  • Fellow freshman Lydia Hart (Cornwall, ON, Canada) captured first place in the 1000 free (10:21.13) and the 500 free (5:07.41) in her first collegiate races.
  • Junior Audrey Mahoney (Downers Grove, Ill.) excelled in the sprint events, winning the 50 free (23.70) and the 100 free (51.46).
  • Sophomore Emily Wright (Ventura, Calif.) dominated the breaststroke, taking first place in both the 100 breast (1:05.80) and the 200 breast (2:22.00).
  • The 200 medley relay team of graduate Sydney Stockwell (Hopkinton, N.H.), Wright, senior captain Chiara Maria Pradissitto (Milan, Italy), and Mahoney started the meet with a first-place finish (1:46.85).
  • Sophomore Grace Mahon (Orange, Conn.) claimed first in the 100 butterfly with a time of 56.66.
  • Sophomore Grace Blume (Dedham, Mass.) took home first in the one-meter dive with a score of 255.35.

DURHAM, N.H. – Hally Laney won two events and Tannah Proudfoot won the 3m diving Friday night as the Catamounts faced off with New Hampshire in a conference dual meet from Swasey Pool. Vermont won five overall events but fell 183-117 Friday evening.

“I am really pleased with how we competed tonight,” said Head Coach Gerry Cournoyer. “Our student-athletes have been competing in back-to-back event over the last three weeks. It’s great to see how well they compete when they are fighting fatigue.”

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Jackie House won the Catamounts first event of the night in the 200 Free. Her time of 1:53.26 was .15 seconds faster than the nearest competition. It was House’s fastest time and the Catamounts fastest time in the event this season by 2.3 seconds.
  • Laney claimed the 200 Fly and the 200 IM Friday night. She topped the field by 1.10 seconds in the 200 Fly with a time of 2:04.58. In the 200 IM her time of 2:08.38 was 2.42 seconds faster than anyone else. Both times were season bests for the Catamounts senior. She also finished second overall in the 100 Fly.
  • Proudfoot earned her third win of the campaign with an overall score of 247.10 in the 3m Friday. It was her second-best 3m effort of the season so far.
  • The Catamounts closed out the night with a 400 Freestyle Relay win. House, Emma WainwrightHavana Layton, and Zoe Webster finished in a time of 3:34.83. They topped UNH’s top group by 2.55 seconds. It was Vermont’s fastest time this season in the 400 Free Relay.

Vermont will compete at home again tomorrow as they host Merrimack at 1 p.m. It will be the Catamounts Annual Rally Against Cancer Meet presented by Mascoma Bank. The action will be streamed live on AmericaEast.TV
