Katinka Hosszu added two more golds on Saturday at the 2014 Salnikov Cup, bringing her total to 6 for the meet, and Vlad Morozov added a pair of wins as well to end the two-day, short course meters, championship.
Hosszu’s two wins came in the 400 IM, where she won with a 4:27.18, and the 100 IM, where she was a 57.89. That 57.89, about a second short of what she went at Worlds last week, was the best women’s swim of the meet on the FINA points scale.
Morozov’s two wins continued to show off his ability across strokes. After winning the 100 IM on Friday, he now has tagged on a 57.51 win in the 100 meter breaststroke: just beating out Oleg Kostin‘s 57.62. Both swimmers just missed their lifetime bests in that race.
Back to his primary focus, Morozov also got a win on Saturday with an impressive 20.85 in the 50 meter free. That time is faster than he was in any of the three rounds at the World Championships where he disappointingly failed to medal, finishing in 4th place.
The Russian male freestylers were swimming well all week long at this meet, Danila Izotov on Saturday won the 200 free in 1:42.22, which is within a second of his swim from the World Championships.
Aside from those two, the Dutch women continued to dominate the women’s side of this meet, winning 4 events on the day (plus 1 from their men). That included a Femke Heemskerk 51.71 in the 100 free, beating out countrymate Ranomi Kromowidjojo (52.35) and Belarusian Aleksandra Herasimenia (53.87).
Inge Dekker won the women’s 50 fly in 25.11, beating out Russian 17-year old Rozaliya Nasretdinova (25.87).
More Russian youth talent emerged in the women’s 200 breaststroke, where the country is a bit thin now thanks to retirement and suspensions. 15-year old Maria Astashkina swam a 2:21.93 to win that race ahead of Ukraine’s Ganna Dzerkal (2:22.50). In the women’s 100 back, 16-year old Daria K Ustinova won with a 57.29.
