Mireia Belmonte Enters Six Events for Rio, Spanish Olympic Team Named

Mireia Belmonte is the big name on the Spanish roster for the upcoming Rio Olympics, and she’s entered to swim in five individual events as well as the 4×200 free relay.

The five-time Spanish record holder will contest four of those events in which she holds national records: 800 free, 200 IM, 400 IM, 200 fly, and then the 400 free. Melani Costa holds the Spanish 400 free record– she’ll be swimming that in Rio, along with the 200 free, 4×100 free relay, and 4×200 free relay.

The men will also enter both free relays, with Michigan alums and brothers Miguel and Bruno Ortiz members of the 4×100 free relay. Florida grad Eduardo Solaeche will contest the 200 IM, while Hugo Gonzalez will compete in both the 100 and 200 backstrokes. Antonio Arroyo and Marc Sanchez, meanwhile, will be swimming the 1500 free.
