Michigan’s Tyler Ray Re-Breaks His Big Ten Championship Meet Record in the 100 Fly

2025 MEN’S BIG TEN CHAMPIONSHIPS

University of Michigan junior Tyler Ray shaved another .02 seconds off his Big Ten Championship Record in the 100 fly on Friday and moved into a tie for 17th place in the all-time rankings, winning his first individual conference title.

He swam 44.28, which broke his prelims record of 44.30, which in turn broke Tomer Frankel‘s 44.32 from last year’s championship. Frankel remains the overall conference record holder with his 43.85 to place runner-up at last year’s NCAA Championship meet.

Ray’s previous best time was a 44.74 done at last year’s NCAA Championship meet in prelims, which qualified him through to the B Final in 9th place. The previous Michigan Record was a 44.46 done by Gal Groumi last season; Ray was previously #2 in program history in this event.

Combined with a half-second drop in the 50 free (18.83) for 2nd place on Thursday, an 18.35 split on Michigan’s winning 200 free relay, and a 19.33 on the butterfly leg of Michigan’s 200 medley relay, this has been a breakout meet for Ray, who is a native of the Detroit area.

Ray is scheduled to swim the 200 fly as his last individual event on Saturday, where he is the 5th seed in 1:42.36.

He is also now the fastest Michigan native ever in the 50 free and 100 fly.
