Michael Phelps Sounds Like a Swim Coach: Gold Medal Minute presented by SwimOutlet.com

Gold Medal Minute presented by SwimOutlet.com

Does Michael Phelps sound more and more like a swim coach?   Listen to his feedback to Ryan Lochte about the 400 IM and whether or not Ryan should race it at the 2016 U.S. Olympic Trials. Also, listen to him during Katie Ledecky‘s world record 800 meter free at the Pro Swim Series in Austin.

Phelps will be coaching at ASU with Bob Bowman after the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio, as reported here:

Bowman says that Phelps is committed to being an assistant coach for the Arizona State Sun Devils for at least the 2016-2017 NCAA season.

How would the Greatest Olympian of All-Time do as a coach?  Olympic stars don’t always make great coaches, but Phelps certainly has wisdom and experience to share.  What do you think? Share in the comments… I think  Phelps could create an incredible butterfly crew. Imagine him standing over your lane, telling you to tweak this or that, get your hips up, balance out your stroke? I’m guessing you would do it, and I’m guessing you would give it your all on repeats in butterfly… Just imagine…out loud…in the comments.

Indirectly challenging Phelps to swim until age 34 was quite a rude seed planting. I’m not convinced the old boys will make the team or medal if they do. If Phelps lost it mentally in 2012, I don’t see how he gets it back as he gets older. He’s going to be intimidated if LeClos puts up a big morning swim. LeClos could break both of Phelps’ butterfly records in Rio and Phelps can only get in the ballpark of his best times from 8 years ago.

He went a lifetime best textile swim in his 100 fly. Account for the gamebreaking rubber suits and I think most people would agree that that 50.45 is the best 100 fly of his life (and all time). So when you say “in the ballpark,” understand that many people are going to disagree.

I will say that I think Phelps scared/embarrassed Le Clos enough this summer that Le Clos is going to have the best year of training of his life. Le Clos is a very real threat, and I wouldn’t be surprised if he edged Phelps in the 200 fly again. However, if Phelps loses, it won’t be because he’s old. It will be because Le Clos is finally… Read more »
