Michael Phelps Due in Baltimore Court Today

Michael Phelps, who was arrested on September 30, 2014 and charged with DUI, excessive speed, and crossing double lane lines, was originally scheduled to appear in court in November. As we reported here, however, his attorney obtained a postponement until December 19, allowing Phelps the time to, as he said, “take some time away to attend a program that will provide the help I need to better understand myself.”

As a reminder, Phelps was stopped by police on September 30 at 1:40 am outside Fort McHenry Tunnel in Baltimore, after being clocked driving 84 mph in a 45-mph zone. Police said Phelps failed field sobriety tests and his blood-alcohol level was 0.14%, nearly twice the state’s legal limit of 0.08%.

Following his arrest, Phelps immediately announced he would seek treatment, while USA Swimming sanctioned him by taking away his athlete’s stipend for six months and removing him from the roster for the 2015 World Championship Team.

Phelps Insta post-workout

Meanwhile, it appears Phelps is on the comeback trail. He attended AT&T Winter Nationals as a spectator, and has been working out regularly. He posted a photo on his Instagram account (@m_phelps00) yesterday with the caption, “After workout today I got to help my new friend how to do a dive!!! What a awesome experience!!!”
