OXFORD, Ohio — Miami University Swimming and Diving opened their 2023-24 season home opener by defeating Cleveland State on Saturday, Sept. 30, at Nixon Aquatic Center. The women’s team finished 237-61, while the men’s team finished 183-115.

How It Happened:

• The RedHawks came in first in both the men’s and women’s 200 medley relay. The women’s team, Madeline Padavic, Emma Schueler, McKenzie Reid and Julia Waechter won with a combined time of 1:44:62. The men, Owen Blazer, Adrian Dulay, Henju Duvenhage and Tegan Barrier finished with a combined time of 1:31:28.
• Greta Kolbeck, Dulay, Bryce Menchhofer, Erin Szczupakiewicz, Natalie Gilson, Sara Lahrach-Sanchez and Allen Cotton all finished first in two solo events across the meet: Kolbeck in the 200 freestyle (1:51:32) and 500 freestyle (4:58:81), Dulay in the 100 breaststroke (58.00) and 200 breaststroke (2:06:92), Menchhofer in the 200 freestyle (1:42:59) and the 500 freestyle (4:44:07), Szczupakiewicz in the 200 butterfly (2:05:90) and 100 butterfly (57.64), Gilson in the 50 freestyle (23.82) and 100 freestyle (52.30), Lahrach-Sanchez in the 100 breaststroke (1:05:84) and 200 breaststroke (2:25:90), and Cotton in the 200 butterfly (1:49:61) and 200 IM (1:52:09).
• Other first-place finishes for the women’s team included Audrey Conley in the 1000 freestyle (10:38:72), alongside Casey Stephens in third (10:42:01); Padavic in the 100 backstroke (57.34), alongside Jenna Halliday in second (57.86) and Angelina Cakuls in third (58.32); Chrisna Bezuidenhout in the 200 backstroke (2:02:09) alongside Mollie Lumsden in second (2:08:38), and Cakuls in third (2:08:38); and Kaylin Herbet in the 200 IM (2:06:68), alongside Ashley Sego in second (2:08:87) and Maggie Stock in third (2:12:50).
• For the men, other first-place finishers were Mason Miller in the 100 freestyle (47.19), alongside Barrier in second (47.23);  Zach Bann in the 200 backstroke (1:51:80) and Duvenhage in the 100 butterfly (49.87).
• Blazer (100 backstroke, 50.22), Mady Bachmeier (200 butterfly, 2:08:61), Taylor Connors (50 freestyle, 24.43), Kevin Donaldson (50 freestyle, 21.87), Waechter (100 freestyle, 52.48), Caitlyn Groff (200 breaststroke, 2:27:02) and Reid (100 butterfly, 58.26) all had second-place finishes.
• The RedHawks had third-place finishes from Uroš Djokovic (200 freestyle, 1:43:26), Miller (100 backstroke, 51.51), Benjamin Eichberg (100 breaststroke, 58.78), Aidan Jacobs (200 butterfly, 1:53:88), Honor Brodie-Foy (50 freestyle, 24.47), Connors (100 freestyle, 53.56), Kenadie Glasgow (200 breaststroke, 2:29:00), Katheryn Antonowich (500 freestyle, 5:17:53), Nick Barrows (500 freestyle, 4:50:69), Ella Ziegert (100 butterfly, 58.76) and Blazer (200 IM, 1:56:01),
• Finishing out the meet, both the men and women came in first for the 400 freestyle relay with Duvenhage, Blazer, Miller and Barrier bringing in a combined time of 3:07:96 for the men and Kolbeck, Gilson, Halliday and Waechter finishing with a combined time of 3:31:43 for the women.
• In diving events, Jackson Miller finished first in both the one meter dive earning a score of 253.58 as well as a 234.23 in the three meter dive. Mia Meinhardt placed first in the one meter dive (235.88), Gretchen Osmun in second (219.53) and Madeline Lutzko in third (208.13) Meinhardt also placed second in the three meter dive (212.70), and Osmun in third (203.48).

Up Next:

Both the men’s and women’s teams will return to action on the road at Oakland University on Friday, Oct. 6. The start time is set for 4 p.m. at the Oakland Aquatic Center.

OXFORD, Ohio – Cleveland State opened the 2023-24 season with a 237-61 setback at Miami (OH) on Saturday afternoon.

“We have so much to be proud of today, individually and collectively,” said head coach Hannah Burandt. “We had moments that really stood out including Brooke winning 3-meter, and Gracie’s anchor leg on the 400 freestyle relay. I’m really pleased with how our upperclassmen led the team today, athletically, and culturally, and how our underclassmen stepped up with assertiveness and competitiveness. This season is going to be fun and exciting for the Vikes.”

Cleveland State won its lone event during 3M diving as Brooke Eichel put up 213.45 points.

Madison Taker had a pair of runner-up finishes in the 1000-yard freestyle (10:41.68) and 500-yard freestyle (5:15.10).

The Green and White capped off the day with a second-place finish in the 400-yard freestyle relay. The team of Ella Ciez, Haley Palmer, Ana Sofia Sousa, and Grace Chelf clocked a time of 3:36.94.

The Vikings return to the pool for the Alumni/Intersquad Meet on Saturday, Oct. 14 at 11 a.m. Following that meet, Cleveland State heads to Indianapolis to face IUPUI and Milwaukee on Friday, Oct. 27 and Saturday, Oct. 28.
