Pro swimmer Melanie Margalis of St. Petersburg Aquatics has scratched out of the final of the women’s 100 breaststroke for Tuesday night.
Margalis qualified 7th into the final on Monday with a 1:07.49 in the semi-finals, which left her a second-and-a-half behind top qualifier Lilly King and more than a second behind second qualifier Molly Hannis, with the top two likely to swim in the Olympics.
While Margalis decided that the effort wasn’t worth the probability, the move bumps 2012 Olympian, and defending Olympic Trials National Champion, Breeja Larson up from 9th into 8th and in an outside lane for Tuesday’s final.
Larson swam 1:05.92 at the 2012 Olympic Trials and finished 6th in London, and also picked up a gold as a prelims swimmer in the 400 medley relay.
Margalis avoids a likely triple on Tuesday evening now; she’s the 5th seed in the 200 free and the 2nd seed in the 200 IM, where prelims and semi-finals are raced today.
Margalis also comes into the meet as the 6th seed in the 200 breaststroke. The 100 breaststroke was the lowest seeded of her 4 entries coming into the meet.
My picks are still alive!! Thanks Melanie and best of luck tonight!:)
I was wondering how Melanie was going to do a triple tonight. Good choice going for the 200 free and 200 IM.
This just got a LOT more interesting heading into finals!
Not really. Still between King, Hardy, Meili, and Hannis (if she dolphins the last 15m).
Go Breeja! So happy she gets another shot!
