The 2025 Swim Atlanta Best of the South meet is underway, and a national age group record was broken during a time trial on Saturday evening.
The quartet of Granger Bartee, Eliza Wallace, Mike Rice, and Maddy Boland teamed up on Mecklenburg Swim Association’s mixed 200-yard medley relay, stopping the clock at 1:32.18 — shattering the previous NAG record by a full second.
The previous record belonged to the Mason Manta Rays, with Olympic silver medalist Carson Foster featuring on their lead-off backstroke leg. World Championship team member Jake Foster swam breaststroke on that relay, with Harna Minezawa swimming butterfly and Alabama star Cora Dupre swimming freestyle.
Bartee’s back leg set the tone for the rest of the race, as he hit the wall in 21.84 — 0.38 under Foster’s pace. Mecklenburg opted to use a female swimmer on the breast leg and a male swimmer on fly, while the Mason Manta Rays did the opposite. The strategy worked well for Mecklenburg, as their middle 100 split of 47.64 was significantly swifter than the Rays’ time of 48.69. Boland anchored in 22.70, compared to Dupre’s 22.27 split.
Splits Comparison:
Mecklenburg Swimming Association’s New Record | Mason Manta Rays’ Old Record | |
Backstroke Leg | 21.84 – Granger Bartee | 22.22 – Carson Foster |
Breaststroke Leg | 26.87 – Eliza Wallace | 24.50 – Jake Foster |
Butterfly Leg | 20.77 – Mike Rice | 24.19 – Harna Minezawa |
Freestyle Leg | 22.70 – Maddy Boland | 22.27 – Cora Dupre |
Total Time | 1:32.18 | 1:33.18 |
In addition to their NAG record-breaking relay performance, the MSA quartet also had impressive individual swims throughout the meet. Wallace, a 17-year-old Tennessee commit, dominated the 100 breast with a winning time of 59.79. She has been as fast as 59.36 during her young career.
Similarly, 18-year-old North Carolina commit Bartee had a strong showing, earning 2nd place in the 100 back (47.42) and 3rd place in the 100 fly (47.99). Both swims were new lifetime bests for Bartee.
Boland, who is just 15, was 5th in the individual 50 free (23.40). That represented her highest finish of the meet through Saturday evening, with one day to go.
Rice, an Auburn commit, finished 2nd in the individual 50 free earlier in the evening. He now ranks 9th all-time in the 50 free in the 15-16 age group, tied with Jack Dolan from the Rockwood Swim Club in Missouri.
Well done MSA! Love to see this for Eliza, Maddy, Granger, and Mike. Hard work pays off!
Congrats MSA
