LSU undergrad Matthew Klotz has broken his own deaf World Record in the 100 long course meter backstroke once again, swimming a 56.06 during prelims at the Tiger Aquatics Summer Classic meet.
Klotz’s old record was a 57.11 that he swam in early June in New Orleans while unshaved and untapered, which also counted as his first Olympic Trials cut.
Now that LSU is deep into their taper, for some in an attempt to earn Olympic Trials cuts this weekend and for others as preparation for their Olympic Trials meet, Klotz has knocked another second off the time to become the first deaf swimmer to ever go under 57 seconds in the event.
Klotz has owned this record since the summer of 2013 when he first broke it en route to Deaflympics gold in Sofia, Bulgaria and has now lowered it by three seconds in three years.
He also swam a 24.88 in the 50 free on Saturday morning.
Klotz didn’t compete for the Tigers last season while dealing with a health issue.
