Luka Mijatovic has been having a very strong meet at the Pacific Swimming Far Western Championships this week, and he added to his NAG record count with a new 15-16 boys record in the 1650 freestyle, making his count 13 individual records.

The 15-year-old from the Pleasanton Seahawks finished 1st in the event at 14:37.63. This time was barely two tenths under the previous record of 14:37.86 set by Liam Custer back in 2020.

Mijatovic was out fast, splitting high 52s and 53s for the first 500 of the race. He slowly dropped into the 54 second range around the 1000 mark, which is where he sat for the rest of the race.

While Mijatovic is the fastest 15-16 year old ever in the 1650 free, he is also one of the fastest milers in the country right now, regardless of age. His time today would have finished 12th in this event at this year’s NCAA Championships, about a second ahead of Tomas Koski from Georgia’s 14:38.20.

He has also swam new best times in the 200 freestyle (1:35.46), 200 back (1:45.77), and 400 IM (3:41.76) so far this meet. He still has the 200 fly, 500 free, and 200 IM remaining.

Only if he were half as good of a teammate as he is a fast swimmer.

We all know he is a phenomenal teammate and motivates others to their best abilities. And you are being petty and jealous, shame on you. Hiding behind the computer is so easy now days.

You obviously do not know him. We have known Luka since he came to Pleasanton and my son is on the team and much slower than him (obviously). Luka has consistently cheered him on, encouraged him when he is down and come to meets he wasn’t even in to show support. Please make sure you know the facts before writing on here.

When Luka set his PB in the 400 IM last year at this competition, It was a 3:47.91. He dropped over 6 seconds in one year…

I think it’s safe to say Luka is the most dominant age group swimmer we’ve seen. The 400 free trials finalists from last summer better be quaking in their boots as he shifts to longcourse.

Thomas Heilman is pretty freakin good too. And Max Williamson. But I agree, not as dominant.

Luka is amazing but I hate the phrasing. What does that mean? Compared to swimmers their own age in a particular event or event Mary T would be considered at least as dominant in her time in the 15-16 age group. Across a series of events Chas Morton, who I swam against just blew everyone away. I was top 16 in the 100 fly for 11-12 boys and he was 8 SECONDS faster than me and 4 seconds faster than the second faster swimmer in age group history in the event at the time he set the record. He held every 11-12 age group record except for one at one time. He still holds at least one 11-12 age group… Read more »

Agree 100 percent with Teamweiss. Chas Morton was the man by a long ways back in the early 1980’s.
