Luchsinger Makes the Difference in SwimSwam Pick ‘Em Contest Day 1

One day in, and we already have our first tie in the SwimSwam Pick ‘Em contest for the 2013 US World Championship Trials, with our coverage and the contest presented by Nike.

Using the ordained tie-breakers, the prize for the first day will go to “Ervinforthewin”. He and “ryster” each had the same number of first-place choices correct (5 of 6 – including the Luchsinger upset for Ervinforthewin), but the second tie breaker saw four correct second-place choices for Ervinforthewin and only two for ryster.

Ervinforthewin deserves this win, one might argue, on the basis that he was one of only two entries that picked Luchsinger in that men’s 200 fly (Miles M. was the other). That’s clutch. Out of over 500 valid entries, only two picked that one.

For those interested, picking strictly according to speed would’ve netted 25 points. 368, well over half, of our entries beat that. See, we knew our readers were the most informed in the land.

The event that our pickers did the best in was the women’s 800 free, where a fairly-predictable Ledecky-Sutton 1/2 resulted in 3815 points (or, 7 events per person). That was by far the most predicted women’s contest of the day; the 200 fly amassed only 1822 points, and the 100 free took only 1745 points (just over 3 points per person). That’s despite a nearly unanimous pick for the win in each (Adams and Franklin, respectively). Both had swimmers outside of the top 12 seeds finish 2nd, where the most points are to be had.

Overall though, a solid first day of picks from our readers.
