The LSU men and women were triumphant in dominant performances Saturday against SMU that included multiple sweeps at the Rockwall Aquatic Center in Rockwall, Texas. The LSU men beat the SMU Mustangs 151-110, and the Tiger women won 177-85. Full pdf results are available here on the Meet Mobile app.
Women’s Meet:
LSU opened the scoring by beating the women of SMU on the 200 medley relay 1:41.68 to 1:43.18. Caley Oquist, Colleen O’Neil, Amber Carter, and Leah Troskot combined for the LSU victory. Isabella Arcila, Tara-Lynn Nicholas, Marne Erasmus, and Natalie Lindborg took second for SMU. LSU’s B relay placed third in 1:45.45.
Oquist would go on to win the 100 back for the Tigers in 55.36, over a second ahead of Arcila, who touched in 56.41 for SMU. LSU also scored a third place finish from Jennifer Reese in 57.84 and a fifth place finish from Makenna Wilson in 58.95. SMU’s Anna Volchkov touched fourth in 58.26.
O’Neil would win then win the 100 breaststroke in 1:02.96, outdoing SMU’s Rachel Nicol, who touched in 1:03.51. Taryn Mackenzie finished third for the Tigers in 1:05.28, while SMU’s Nicholas was fourth in 1:05.64.
Carter won the 50 freestyle in 23.11, beating SMU’s Nathalie Lindborg, who was 23.34 for second. Troskot was third for the Tigers in 24.09.
Lindborg and Carter would trade places in the 100 freestyle. Lindborg’s win gave SMU its first victory of the meet with a strong 50.27, finishing well ahead of Carter, who was 51.03 for second. Oquist and Troskot were third and fourth for LSU in 51.65 and 52.15, respectively.
Following the medley relay, Devon Dabney and Jane MacDougall kept the Tiger momentum rolling with a 1-2 finish in the 1000 freestyle. Dabney touched at 10:18.35, well ahead of MacDougall’s 10:24.08. Kristy McLauchlin finished third for the Mustangs with a 10:27.40.
Megan Cox scored LSU’s third win in a row with her 1:50.13 in the 200 freestyle. Cox swam another stellar freestyle performance for the Tigers, beating SMU’s Ursa Bezan by over two seconds. Bezan touched at 1:52.39. Danielle Stirrat scored a third place finish for the Tigers in 1:53.83. Adri Santa touched fourth for SMU in 1:54.69, and Stacey Stanfield rounded out the top five for the Tigers with a 1:55.13.
Cox doubled up on her 200 freestyle win with another victory in the 500 freestyle, where she was just as dominant. Her 4:59.56 was good for the victory, and she beat her teammate Dabney, who won the 1000, in the process. Dabney touched in 5:03.04. Bezan was third for the Mustangs in 5:05.77.
LSU swept the 200 butterfly behind another dominant performance, this one from the Kara Kopcso, who touched at 1;59.04. Kopcso was the only swimmer under two minutes and finished more than four seconds ahead of teammate Sophie Weber, who was 2:03.12. Kate Zimmer rounded out the sweep for the Tigers with a 2:08.99.
Arcila secured SMU its second win of the day with her victory in the 200 backstroke. Arcila touched in 2:01.84. Stirrat and Reese touched in second and third for the Tigers in 2:02.67 and 2:04.08, respectively.
Nicol bested O’Neil in the 200 breaststroke to give SMU its third win in as many events. Nicol, who took second in the 100 breaststroke, was 2:17.72 to beat O’Neil, who won the 100 breaststroke, touched in 2:18.65. McLauchlan was third for the Mustangs in 2:20.24.
LSU came right back with a 1-2 finish in the 100 butterfly. Kopcso finished in 54.11, followed by Carter in 54.39. Marne Erasmus touched in 56.20 for the Mustangs, but Zimmer was fourth for LSU in 57.29.
Then, LSU went 1-2-3 in the 200 IM, behind Oquist, O’Neil, and Weber, who were 2:04.17, 2:04.97, and 2:06.30, respectively.
In the 400 freestyle relay, LSU won its third event in a row with the team of Troskot, Cox, Kopcso, and Stirrat in 3:25.35. Cox posted the fastest split with a 50.57. Arcila, Lindborg, Santa, and Erasmus finished second for SMU in 3:27.84. Lindborg posted the fastest split with a 50.97. LSU’s B relay finished third in 3:35.75.
Men’s Meet:
SMU’s A team of Samuel Straughan, Ziga Cerkovnik, Tyler Rauth, and Bartosz Krzyzaniak out dueled the LSU A relay of , Michael Young, Silas Dejean, Joao Victor Mescolote, and Marco Gonzalez, 1:31.45 to 1:31.60. Straughan made the difference in the backstroke, leading off for SMU with a 22.91 to Young’s 23.86, providing enough of a cushion for the Mustangs to hold on. LSU’s B relay took third in 1:32.19.
LSU answered back with a victory from Frank Greeff in the 1000 freestyle by almost a seven second margin. Greeff’s 9:35.23 dominated the rest of the field. Eastmon Holloway finished second for the Mustangs in 9:42.21, besting the Tigers’ Matthew Schaefer, who took third in 9:42.54, in a race that came down to the last 100. Schaefer out-split Holloway over the 100, 58.00 to 58.92, but was unable to run Holloway down.
SMU scored a victory from Christian Scherubl in the 200 freestyle in 1:39.91. Scherubl was the only man under 1:41. He touched at 1:39.91. LSU’s Alex Linge and Damen Pheiffer took second and third in 1:41.88 and 1:42.11 respectively. Matthew Colket swam a 1:45.92 for the Mustangs, good for fourth. Braydon Bergeron touched fifth for the Tigers in 1:46.37.
Straughan, who swam backstroke on the winning 200 medley relay, secured SMU’s second win in as many events in the 100 backstroke with a 49.39, the only swimmer under 50 seconds. Krzyzaniak took second for the Mustangs with a 50.27. LSU got a three, four, five finish from Daniel Swietlicki in 50.72, Logan Rysemus in 51.11, and Young in 51.46.
Dejean and teammates Garrett House and Harry Ackland got the Tigers back on track with 1-2-3 finish in the 100 breaststroke. Dejean finished in 56.65 while House finished in 57.56. Ackland touched in 59.14 to beat SMU’s Stefan Popov, who was 59.37.
The 200 breaststroke saw the same four swimmers finish in the top four. House topped Dejean with a 2:04.48 to Dejean’s 2:05.87. Their teammate Ackland again took down Popov enroute to the third place finish. Ackland touched in 2:10.15 compared to Popov’s 2:10.50.
LSU got their second win in a row in the 200 fly, although it was a close race between Brandon Goldman and Tyler Rauth of SMU. A 1:51.39 from Goldman was good enough for the win, while Rauth’s 1:51.86 was good for second. Third went to Jake Markham of LSU in 1:52.96.
The LSU sprinters won both the 50 and 100 yard freestyle to help keep the tigers rolling. Gonzalez and Mescolote took first and second in the 50 in 20.66 and 21.02, respectively. SMU’s Cerkovnik was third in 21.08.
In the 100 freestyle, it was LSU’s Linge who beat Cerkovnik. Linge touched in 46.10 to Cerkovnik’s 46.28. Pheiffer was third for the Tigers in 47.42.
Krzyzaniak (1:50.31) and Swietlicki (1:50.48) battled over the 200 backstroke, but it was Krzyzaniak of SMU who touched first. Krzyzaniak opened up in 54.38, almost a half a second behind Swietlicki’s 53.89. However, Krzyzaniak was 55.93 over the second 100 compared a 56.59 from Swietlicki. Brandon Goldman finished third for Tigers in 1:51.37.
Scherubl of SMU doubled up on his 200 freestyle win with a victory in the 500 freestyle with a dominant 4:33.56 performance. Second place went to LSU’s Markham in 4:41.44. Greeff could not repeat his strong 1000 performance and finished third with a 4:43.89.
Straughan then doubled up on his 100 backstroke with a victory in the 100 butterfly. He was the only swimmer under 50 seconds with his 49.95, and finished over half a second ahead of LSU’s Devin McCaffrey, who was 50.57. Linge and Rysemus touched third and fourth in 51.10 and 52.47 for the Tigers, respectively.
LSU swept the men’s 200 IM, as well, with Swietlicki, Goldman, and House, taking the top three spots in 1:53.71, 1:54.28, and 1:54.73, respectively.
Krzyzaniak, Straughan, Cerkovnik, and Scherubl won the 400 freestyle relay for SMU. Scherubl posted a 45.16 split from the anchor leg. Linge, Gonzalez, Young, and Markham finished second for LSU in 3:03.77. Markham had the fastest Tiger split with a 45.17. the LSU B relay finished third in 3:11.28.
Diving scores will be factored in after completion of the the 3 meter competition on Sunday at the Tennessee Diving Invitational, where both diving teams are competing, according to both teams Twitter accounts.
