AUSTIN, Texas — University of Texas junior Paola Pineda rallied to win the women’s 3-meter title to highlight Thursday’s first day of action in the UT Diving Invitational at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center. The UT Diving Invitational is a three-day meet featuring divers from Texas, Arkansas and LSU.
In the women’s 3-meter competition, Pineda sat in third place through four rounds with a score of 244.45 and trailed Arkansas’ Brooke Schultz and Maha Amer, who each had scores of 252.30. In her fifth dive, a reverse 2 ½ somersault tuck, Pineda posted a score of 68.60 (scores of 8.0, 8.5 and 8.0) to grab a slim lead (313.05-310.80) over Schultz. Pineda sealed the win with a score of 67.50 on her final dive, a forward 2 ½ somersault 1 twist pike.
Pineda claimed the title a six-round score of 380.55, while Schultz placed second at 359.10. Freshman Bridget O’Neil took third for the Longhorns with a score of 348.90.
In the men’s 1-meter finals, freshman Noah Duperre placed second with a six-round score of 367.20. Senior Jordan Windle, who had the best score (403.50) in the morning prelims, took third at 364.20, and sophomore Andrew Harness took fourth with a score of 334.58. Junior Andrew Gawin-Parigini placed seventh at 244.80.
The UT Diving Invitational continues on Friday, Nov. 20 with the women’s 1-meter finals at 5 p.m. CT and the men’s 3-meter finals at 6:30 p.m. CT. Both finals will be televised live nationally by Longhorn Network. Due to health and safety protocols, the event is closed to the public.
