PHILADELPHIA – The La Salle swim and dive teams wrapped up its two-meet homestand Friday afternoon, competing at Kirk Pool for the second straight Friday.
The women’s team defeated the UMBC Retrievers by a score of 171-129, while the men fell to UMBC by a decision of 178-121.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Explorers started off the meet strong, winning the first two events, which were the 200-yard medley relays.
- The winning women’s team in that event (Gabrysia Herbreder, Carlota Ungo, Camilla Frost, and Tori Fenn) finished in a time of 1:45.92.
- Tarik Gusic, Andrea Savoca, Felix Jedbratt, and Carter Perkins made up the winning team in the men’s event, completing the relay in 1:30.72.
- Beren Celik won the 200-yard free by a hair, with her time of 1:57.93 edging out second place by six hundredths of a second.
- Zyenna Martinez, Heather Levesque, and Shailla Mejia went 1-2-3 in the 100-yard backstroke.
- On the men’s side in that event, Gusic and Noah Fredriksson finished first and second.
- Both teams dominated in the 100-yard back. Herbreder and Ungo placed in the top two on the women’s side, and Savoca’s time of 56.91 was easily the winner in the men’s event.
- In the women’s 200-yard fly, the Frost twins, Cecilie and Camilla, went first and second.
- Jedbratt went on to win two individual events, which was the 50-yard free and the 100-yard fly.
- Martinez and Gusic each went on to win their second individual event in the 200-yard backstroke.
- Ungo got her second win of the day in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:22.12.
- Tori Fenn held off her competitors in the 100-yard fly, winning by a quarter of a second.
- Herbreder got her third win of the day in the 200-yard IM, winning by nearly five seconds.
- In the final swim event of the day, the men’s 400-yard free relay team of Perkins, Jedbratt, Fredriksson, and Gusic took gold.
- On the diving side, Tiffany Brawn won both the one-meter and three-meter events. Kelsie Waddington got third in each of those events.
UP NEXT
- The Explorers will embark on its final road trip before conference championships next weekend, competing against Fordham on Saturday, January 25. The meet will start at 11:00 a.m.

Philadelphia, Pa. — The UMBC Women’s Swimming & Diving team traveled to La Salle and saw tons of success on Friday in its first meet since early December.
“Great effort by the Lady Dawgs today,” said head coach Matt Donovan. “We competed against a tough, well coached team and we fought every step of the way. I am extremely impressed with this team and how we keep raising the bar each week.”
Kolby Reese had a strong day as she won the 500 free in 5:16.05 and took second in the 1000 free when out-touched a La Salle swimmer by .04 (10:50.82). Bruna de Padua won the 1000 free in 10:39.41, while Ashley Gutshall took first in the 50 free in 24.48. Makaela Hill won the 100 free in 52.95, Gutshall took second in 54.24.
The 400 free relay team of de Padua, Gutshall, Hill and Claire Oettinger took home gold in 3:33.71
On the diving side, Alicia Buteau placed second in the 1 meter (241.80), Ember Stennett finished second in the 3 meter with a score of 248.10.
The Retrievers will face George Washington over two days next weekend. First, they will host the Revolutionaries for Senior Day on Saturday at 1 p.m., before heading to D.C. on Sunday for a 10 a.m. start.
Philadelphia, Pa. — The UMBC Men’s Swimming & Diving team returned to the pool in style, defeating host La Salle 178-121 in its first action since early December.
“Really good meet for the team today,” said head coach Matt Donovan. “We are getting a lot closer to figuring out our conference line up. We have a few things to clean up but this was a great effort against a strong opponent.”
Nick Zaharescu won the 1000 in 9:57.79, Christian Castro took second in exactly 10:00.00. Boris Milev (1:42.70) and Andrew McEachern (1:43.86) went 1-2 in the 200 free.
UMBC took the top three spots in the 200 fly as Marko Kovacic won in 1:54.03, followed by Max Casey-Bolanos (1:58.47) and Axel Mori (2:06.52). Milev then won the 100 free in 47.05. Max Trias (2:12.96), James Tao (2:13.78) and Matthew Johnson (2:15.10) followed by finishing 1-2-3 in the 200 breaststroke.
McEachern (4:47.60), Castro (4:54.13) and Brendan Hanlon (5:01.81) then swept the podium in the 500 free, while Trias (1:59.88), Tao (2:02.28) and Zaharescu (2:04.59) were the top three in the 200 IM.
Isaac Poole continued to dominate the diving portion as he won both the 1 meter (298.88) and 3 meter (288.63)
Kaleb Cave (256.50) and Grant Moore (248.10) took third and fourth, respectively, in the 1 meter, while Anders Logas (253.35) and Andy Vines (243.68) went 3-4 in the 3 meter.
