La Salle Women Roll Past UMBC, Retriever Men Edge Out Explorers

BALTIMORE, Md. – The women’s swimming and diving team secured their first win of the young 2023-24 season against UMBC 178-121

The men came up just shy losing to the Retrievers 155-145. Both teams will be back in action in the first home meet of the season on Saturday, Oct. 21st against Drexel.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The women’s 200-medley team of Lauren FennCarlota UngoTori Fenn, and Toni Rafferty took first place with a 1:48.31 time.
  • George Williamson earned his third individual win of the season in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 9:52.97.
  • The first win of the season for Felicia Rogell came in the women’s 200-yard freestyle with a pace of 1:58.30.
  • The women’s 100-yard backstroke was won by Rosalia Marin-Martinez, her first win of the 23-24 season.
  • Ungo secured her second victory of the meet in the women’s 100-yard breaststroke swimming at a 1:07.22 time.
  • Andrea Savoca is proving to be a force in his second meet with the Explorers. He earned his second individual win of the season in the 100-yard breaststroke.
  • Another win on the women’s side came from Sam Boyes. Her 2:13.22 time in the 200-yard butterfly was good enough for the top spot.
  • Felix Jedbratt came in first place in the men’s 200-yard butterfly.
  • The men and women’s 50-yard freestyle were won by La Salle’s Toni Rafferty and Zack Miller.
  • Explorers diving completed a clean sweep of their four events. Lucas Dekaney took first in the men’s one-meter and three-meter, while Tiffany Brawn took first in the women’s one-meter and Payton DeCook took the first-place spot in the three-meter.
  • Ungo’s third win of the meet came in the 200-yard breaststroke. Savoca took the first-place spot in the same event for the men.
  • Williamson took first in the second distance race by the men in the 500-yard free.
  • In both 100-yard butterfly events Toni Rafferty took first for the women, and Jedbratt for the men.
  • Rogell won the 200-yard IM for the Explorers.
  • Both men and women 400-yard freestyle teams took first place for the Explorers.

BALTIMORE — Dani Nicusan took gold in all four events he competed in as the UMBC Men’s Swimming and Diving team defeated a very strong La Salle squad, 155-145, on Saturday.

“We took a good step forward today. Especially with our younger swimmers, they will be a force for us this season,” said head coach Matt Donovan. “The divers fought hard and our senior leadership really lead the way.  Big things to come for us this year.”

Nicusan won the 100 Back, 100 Free, 200 IM and was on the gold-winning 200 Medley relay. In the latter, he was joined by Max Casey-BolanosOliver Gassmann and Bode Neale to finish in 1:33.22, just ahead of La Salle’s top quartet’s 1:33.86 time.

Neale finished third in the 100 Free and also won the 200 Free by .31 in a time of 1:45.21, while Nicusan, JJ Chapman and Casey-Bolanos went 1-2-3 in the 100 Back. Casey-Bolanos and Chapman then finished first and third in the 200 Back.

Freshman diver Andy Vines impressed in his first home meet, coming in second in the 3 meter dive with a score of 267.00, and taking fourth in the 1 meter with a score of 199.12.

The Retrievers essentially sealed the victory by taking the top three spots in the penultimate event of the day, the 200 IM. After Nicusan touched first at 1:58.06, James Tao (1:59.83) and Zach Deal (2:02.38) followed to give UMBC a 15 point lead heading into the 400 Free, which they took second and third in.

The Retrievers will host the Black & Gold/Alumni Meet for Homecoming next Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
