Following up to an already impressive Day One at the 2014 U.S. Paralympics CanAm Championships at Miami’s Ransom Everglades School, Michelle Konkoly (S9) from Georgetown University continued to rewrite the record books with a very impressive 50m Freestyle swim in only her fourth Paralympic Swimming event since her injury in 2011, with a time of 30.06, which set a new American record that had previously been in place since 2006. Konkoly is extremely excited to finish her senior year at Georgetown and hoping to be named to the Team USA roster for the Para Pan Pacific Championships in August.
After a hiatus following the London 2012 Paralympic Games in London, Brad Snyder (S11) has regained his form in Miami with another strong performance on Day Two, winning both the 50m Freestyle and 100m Backstroke on Friday evening.
Overall, competition on Friday evening brought out several additional dominating and record setting performances by other U.S. athletes, including Kayla Wheeler (S5), Roy Perkins (S5) and Leslie Cichocki (SM14).
The Canadian swimmers faired well on day 2 of the 2014 Spring CanAm competition. Benoit Huot won the S10 200m IM with a 2:16.66, which is under the Para Pan Pac qualifying standard to represent Canada over the summer.
“Overall it was good but obviously I’m disappointed about my 200 IM. It still was a good race and it was a good time for this time of the year,” Rivard said. “It was OK to be sad and disappointed for a moment but I don’t want to be negative for the rest of my swim meet so I just told myself that it wasn’t the end of the world. I still made my Pan Pacs time, so I just moved on and turned the page.”
