Both of the University of Kentucky’s women’s and men’s 4 x 200y freestyle relays broke school records on day 1 of the SEC Championships, placing fifth and eighth, respectively. Below, senior Christina Bechtel and junior Scott Crosthwaite discuss the training that went into their school record-breaking relay performances. They also touch on their individual 200y freestyle school lead-offs, which resulted in a 1:46.39 school record for Bechtel and a 1:36.00 for Crosthwaite as his program’s fifth-fastest ever.

The women of Vanderbilt also had a big day, kicking off their SEC Championships with a school record of their own in the 4 x 200y freestyle relay. The squad of Elly Faulkner, Summer Brown, Carrie Bencic and Hannah Martin combined to clock a 7:21.72, knocking almost 10 seconds off of their fastest in-season time set at the Georgia Tech Invitational last fall.
