Assistant Swimming and Diving Coach and Intramural Director

Job Description:

Location: Hope College, East 12th Street, Holland, MI, USA

The Assistant Swimming and Diving Coach and Intramural Director is responsible for assisting the Head Swimming and Diving Coach in recruiting, training, and coaching members of the Hope College Swimming and Diving teams as well as directing the Hope College Intramural Program.  The Assistant Coach is required to abide by the rules and regulations established by Hope College, the MIAA, and NCAA, and represent Hope College and the swimming and diving programs in a professional manner.  The Assistant Coach is required to pass the NCAA compliance exam with an 80% or better score and maintain first aide, CPR and AED certification. This position is a full-time, ten-month benefit eligible staff position. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Coaching Responsibilities:

  1. Coaching
    1. Serve as assistant coach for the Hope College swimming and diving programs
    2. Practice planning and implementation of swimming techniques and training progressions
    3. Potentially coach a specific training group
    4. Other duties as determined by the head coach
  2. Recruiting
    1. Assist with recruitment of high school and junior college students, including traveling to events, school visits, phone calls, follow-up correspondence and database management
      1. Identification of strong potential student-athletes for Hope College and the swimming and diving programs
    2. Assist with on-campus visits
  3. Game Day Management
    1. Significant involvement with home meet setup and breakdown
    2. Assist with coordination of meet management
  4. Office Operations
    1. Assist in travel planning
    2. Assist in other program logistics
  5. Student-Athlete Mentoring
    1. Develop positive relationships with student-athletes
  6. Continuing Education
    1. Attend professional development seminars and workshops to continually develop coaching knowledge and skills

Other Responsibilities:

  1. Assisting with athletic event management during as assigned by the Athletic Director.
  2. Direct the Hope College Intramural Program to provide an excellent recreational experience for students on Hope’s campus.  Duties include, but are not limited to:
  • Captain’s meetings, scheduling regular season competition, playoff schedules, and conducting worker meetings for each of the 4 IM seasons/19 sports offered.
  • Reserve all spaces on campus and off that the IM program uses (including scheduling lights for fields that require them).
  • Surveying students to evaluate IM program effectiveness
  • Recruit, hire, train, supervise, approve work-study hours, and evaluate student workers/supervisors.
  • Maintain injury reports.
  • Update and maintain the IM Website so it’s current, including IM Handbook/rules for play, champions, weather info, meeting/registration times.
  • Purchase and keep an inventory of all equipment needs for the program.
  • Recognize champions each season.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • Competitive swimming experience preferred
  • Prior college coaching experience preferred
  • Preferred experience working in the athletic/recreation field
  • Ability to support intramural director effectively and to connect well with students
  • The understanding and support of the mission of Hope College
  • Must believe in and adhere to the mission and beliefs of Hope College, the Kinesiology Department, and Hope College Athletics
