Director of Competitive Swimming

The Ridgewood YMCA is seeking to hire a head coach for its competitive swimming program.
The Ridgewood YMCA Breakers have a tradition of excellence competing at the local, regional
and national level within both the YMCA dual meet league organizations and USA Swimming.
The Breakers Swim Team is proud to provide youth with the opportunity to learn how to be the
best swimmers they can be while learning the skills, self-reliance, and the physical conditioning
for personal success. With the support of a dedicated coaching staff, this position provides
supervision and direction to the team, as well as all administrative responsibilities.
The new head coach in partnership with the Ridgewood YMCA staff and Breakers parent board
will be asked to build on the history and legacy of this beloved program, that has graduated many
swimmers who have competed on the collegiate level. New coach will be a Motivator,
Collaborator, Innovator, and Mentor in building positive relationships in and out of the water by
setting the appropriate example for all to emulate within the program.

Areas of Responsibility:
• Exemplify the YMCA Core Values of Caring, Honesty, Respect and Responsibility.
• Management of the day-to-day operations of the Breakers Swim Team, ensuring that the
program complies with YMCA policies and procedures and recommended YMCA
Competitive Swimming Guidelines for program quality and safety standards.
• Serve as Head Coach to the Breakers Swim Team, providing direct service at practices
and meets.
• Recruit, supervise and evaluate a strong team of staff and volunteers. Organize people
and activities to further the success of the program, with a focus on development for
assistant coaches.
• Oversee administrative aspects of the team including, meet selection and registration,
group placement, practice scheduling and maintaining team records.
• Assist YMCA Leadership Team in executing the Ridgewood YMCA’s mission through
participation in regular staff meetings and focus groups.
• Communicate regularly and professionally with swimmers, parents, volunteers and
coaches.
• In collaboration with the VP of Aquatics & Strategic Partnerships, create an environment
conducive to having fun while focusing on growth and improvement.
• Reach beyond the wall of the pool by engaging the swim team in the larger organization
and our communities.
• Recruit and work collaboratively with cause driven parent volunteers.

• Recruit and retain a diverse staff of men and women.
• Develops, implements and manages operating plans from department budgets to growth
strategies to ensure the continued success of the Ridgewood YMCA and the Breakers
Swim Team.
• Work with Aquatics Leadership Team to ensure we are meeting the overall aquatic needs
of the community.
• Look to partner and establish appropriate fitness program for all age swimmers.
• Create a Team in every sense of the word.

Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s Degree in a related field or equivalent experience.
• Current American Red Cross Lifeguard, First Aid and CPR/AED for the Professional
Rescuer, Safety Training for Swim Coaches certification
• ASCA Level 2 certification or above strongly preferred
• YMCA Team Leader certification preferred (can be attained after hire)
• Current YMCA Competitive Swimming and Diving certification (can be attained after
hire)

Skills and Experience:
• 4+ years’ experience as a Head Coach or Assistant Coach of a Y (preferred) or USA
Swimming team.
• Budget administration for assigned department.
• Experience leading and mentoring Assistant Coaches.
• Working computer knowledge and excellent communication skills.
• Ability to demonstrate (pre-hire) and maintain certification level of physical and mental
readiness
