Head Coach Job Description
This is a leadership position that will support and carry out the club’s Vision, Values, and Behaviors through leadership & development, and help set the direction of the Swim Team Program. The Head Coach, working with the Executive Director and the Director of Competitive Swimming, will provide support for all aspects of the Team and Aquatic Programs with a focus on developing our swimmers’ skills and athleticism. Our swim coaches play a significant role in what makes EMAC a high-level swim program. Providing quality and engaging instruction is one of the most important responsibilities of our coaches.

Key Responsibilities:
- Educate and ensure all coaches on staff are proficient in their roles and responsibilities to help EMAC be one of the best programs in Middle Atlantic Swimming.
- Assist the EMAC Leadership in the design of the competitive swimming program that fits within the scope of group goals and objectives and focuses on long-term athlete development (LTAD).
- Design the seasonal plans and group standards for the Age Group Program that fit within the scope of group goals and objectives.
- Assist with producing the seasonal practice schedules and weekly coach schedules.
- Provide Leadership and Instruction to the LEAD Group coaches, swimmers, and parents.
- Administer and train LEAD coaches on the seasonal and LTAD plans.
- Recruit, Manage, Mentor, and Evaluate direct reports (monitoring Team Unify, attendance, events, best times, qualifying times, entries, newsletter info, and observations).
- Ensure LEAD coaches are managing, mentoring, and evaluating their direct reports.
- Conduct at a minimum, monthly check-ins or 1:1 meetings with direct reports, providing guidance and an opportunity for learning and feedback with LEAD Coaches.
- Conduct parent meetings as needed.
- Help lead and facilitate staff meetings along with the EMAC Leadership.
- Ensure regular communications with parents at all Levels via Newsletter.
- Oversee the recruitment of swimmers by ensuring summer league meets are attended by coaches and clinics are conducted.
- Ensure administrative and coordination needs and requirements are met both internally and externally for all swimmers and coaches.
- Oversee age group meet entries and attend meets as required.
- Approve and assist with assistant coaches’ schedules with LEAD Coaches.
- Maintain compliance with USA Swimming coaching standards.
- Work closely with the EMAC Leadership to provide feedback and input on requirements and needs, as well as report on delivering the vision and responsibilities.
- Follow all USA Swimming and EMAC policies and codes of conduct, including SafeSport, as well as ensure all Assistant coaches are compliant.
Skills and Qualifications:
- At least 10 years of competitive swim coaching for a USA, AAU, or YMCA/YWCA program, with at least 3 of those years as a LEAD Coach or responsible for a group. Current USA Swimming Coach Member certifications and in good standing; ASCA level 2 or higher certification, preferred.
- Thorough knowledge of competitive swimming, stroke mechanics, training methods/plans, and terminology. Proven leader and developer of the coaching staff.
- Solid interpersonal communication skills and demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with athletes of all ages, as well as staff and families.
- Successful instructing, managing, and connecting with elementary & middle-level children.
- Enthusiastic, team-oriented, positive role model, effective communicator, and leader
- Strong communication and organization skills.
- Ability to create a positive, inclusive environment where all swimmers are inspired to improve and succeed.
- Demonstrated ability in administrative skills and understanding of budgets.
Physical and Schedule Requirements: The position requires travel to swim meets and a mixture of days, nights, weekends, and holiday work. There is no typical workweek as practices may be held in the mornings, afternoons, and evenings depending on children’s ages and seasonal variations.
