For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) state finalist Olivia Somers has announced her verbal commitment to stay in-state and swim at the University of California, Los Angeles beginning in the fall of 2027. She confirmed the news in an email to SwimSwam, writing:

I’m incredibly excited to announce my commitment to UCLA. I owe so much to my teammates and coaches at Lifetime for believing in me and helping me grow every step of the way. After getting to know the coaches and team, I knew UCLA was the place where I wanted to continue challenging myself and pursue my goals. I can’t wait to be a Bruin.

A rising senior at Rio Americano High School in Sacramento, Somers swims for her high school team and trains year-round with Life Time Northern California, where she specializes in sprint freestyle and butterfly.

Somers is coming off a 2025-26 season that saw her drop over two seconds in the 100 fly, exactly two seconds in the 100 free, and 0.81 in the 50 free. She set her current lifetime best of 57.04 in the 100 fly at Speedo Sectionals – Roseville in late February, touching 16th in the event. She also clocked then-PBs of 23.51 and 51.70 in the 50 and 100 free at the meet, finishing eighth and 21st, respectively, her first time breaking the 24- and 52-second barriers.

Somers went on to clock her current PBs in the 50 and 100 free at the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Championships in May, where she claimed double bronze with times of 23.30 and 50.69 before going on to touch 13th in both events at the State meet with times of 23.58 and 51.64.

Top SCY Times:

  • 50 Freestyle: 23.30
  • 100 Freestyle: 50.69
  • 100 Butterfly: 57.04

The UCLA women finished seventh out of 14 teams at the 2026 Women’s Big Ten Swimming and Diving Championships. To score at the meet, times of 22.54 and 49.24 were required in the 50 and 100 free, and 53.24 was needed in the 100 fly, putting her outside the cutoffs for now, though she still has two full seasons of training before lining up for the Bruins at her first conference meet.

Somers joins Lilla Kapinya, Alicia Budacsek, Cadence Johnson, Andi Taylor, Karina Conover Hui, and Alison Su in committing to the Bruins’ class of 2031 so far.
