Welsh swimmer Jazmin Carlin took a silver medal in the women’s 800 free on Thursday at the 2014 World Short Course Championships in Doha, Qatar, and in the process broke the British Record over a short course meters pool.
Carlin swam an 8:08.16, which just snuck under the record of 8:08.25 done by British distance legend Rebecca Adlington, who was an 8:08.25 in 2008.
Carlin’s old personal best was an 8:12.01, done a year ago in Glasglow.
The comparative splits:
Adlington ’08 | Carlin ’14 | |
100 | 59.6 | 59.1 |
200 | 2:01.4 | 2:00.3 |
300 | 3:02.7 | 3:02.0 |
400 | 4:04.1 | 4:03.5 |
500 | 5:05.2 | 5:04.8 |
600 | 6:06.5 | 6:06.5 |
700 | 7:08.0 | 7:08.3 |
800 | 8:08.25 | 8:08.16 |
Carlin, with a very fast closing 50 meters, overtook Adlington’s pace for the record – though she was well too far back to overcome Belmonte for the win. The time also puts Carlin into 9th place on the all-time list globally in the event.
