Iona Women Win Sixth Straight Over SCSU; Owl Men Down Gaels In Home Opener

NEW HEAVEN, CT – The Iona University men’s and women’s swimming and diving team split a pair of non-conference dual meets at the Hutchinson Natatorium on the campus of Southern Connecticut State University in New Haven today. The Iona women increased their record to 7-1 with a commanding 175-113 win. The Iona men fall to 3-4 with a 153-138 loss.

The Iona women took both the 200 Medley and Freestyle Relays along with 9 other individual wins. The Iona men could only manage 1 relay win and 4 individual races.

“Southern swam very well today on the men’s side,” commented Coach Nick Cavataro. “They were aggressive in every race and they were able to close races better today than we did. We have to be more consistent, Cavataro continued.

The Iona women had no problems with SCSU, as Megan Josephs (100 and 200-Free), Isabella Nicholson (100-Breast and 500-Free) and for the first time this season Tristan Urso (200-Breast and 400-IM) all recorded double wins. Luiza DaSilveira (100-Back) Julia Moser (50-Free) and Victoria Novinskiy (100-Butterfly) also added wins.

On the men’s side Michael Faughnan (100 and 200-Free) along with David Son (100-Butterfly) and Matthew Woyksnar (500-Free) were the Iona winners.

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Southern Connecticut men’s swimming & diving team beat Iona University, 153-138, in a dual meet in New Haven, Conn. on Nov. 12, 2022.

HOW IT HAPPENED

200 Yard Medley Relay
Chandler Tucker (Bellmore, N.Y.), Mason Wilde (Tolland, Conn.), Henry Velazquez (Fairfield, Conn.), Franklin Kuhn (Tolland, Conn.) combined for a 1:36.09 for second place in the 200 Yard Medley Relay.

1,000 Yard Freestyle 
McAllistar Milne (Glastonbury, Conn.) posted a time of 9:44.46 for first place in the 1,000 Yard Freestyle. Dylan Prescher (Ellington, Conn) placed second in the event with a time of 10:12.25 and Samir Souidi (Lynbrook, N.Y.) placed third with a time of 10:26.13.

200 Yard Freestyle
Franklin Kuhn was Southern’s top finisher in the 200 Yard Freestyle with a time of 1:45.80 for second place, with Jack Fry (Southbury, Conn.) coming in fourth place at 1:49.01.

100 Yard Backstroke
Chandler Tucker had a first-place finish for the the Owls in the 100 Yard Backstroke with at 51.83. Joseph Starkey (Madison, Conn.) also scored for Southern with a fourth-place finish at 55.32 followed by teammate Collin Doyle (Hartford, Conn.) finishing in fifth at 56.13.

100 Yard Breaststroke
Mason Wilde posted the Owls top time in the 100 Yard Breaststroke at 1:00.18 for first place followed by Kobe Dominguez (West Hartford, Conn.) in third with 1:01.26 and Nick Fournier (Leominster, Mass.) in fifth with 1:05.59.

200 Yard Butterfly
Henry Velazquez posted a time of 1:55.73 in the 200 Yard Butterfly for first place, followed by Mike Aiello (Monroe, Conn.) at 1:59.39 and Zach Krantz (Middletown, Conn.) at 2:11.77.

50 Yard Freestyle
Chandler Tucker was the Owls’ top finisher in the 50 Yard Freestyle with a time of 21.97 for first place followed by Jack Fry in fifth at 22.83.

1 Meter Diving
Matheus Silva (Stratford, Conn.) posted a 268.72 to win the 1 Meter event with Jonathon Tressel (Meriden, Conn.) totaling 218.25.

100 Yard Freestyle
Franklin Kuhn was second in the 100 Yard Freestyle with a time of 47.64 while Jack Fry finished fifth at 50.14.

200 Yard Backstroke
Chandler Tucker was Southern’s top finisher in the 200 Yard Backstroke with a time of 1:57.08, followed by teammate J.D. Starkey in third place at 2:00.59. Kobe Dominguez finished in fifth for a point with 2:04.69.

200 Yard Breaststroke 
McAllistar Milne posted the Owls top time in the 200 Yard Breaststroke at 2:09.11 followed by Mason Wilde in second at 2:11.81.

500 Yard Freestyle
Dylan Prescher finished for the Owls in the 500 Yard Freestyle with a second-place finish at 4:54.91. Samir Souidi finished in fourth at 5:03.02 and Gracie Marsh finished for 5:51.97 for fifth.

100 Yard Butterfly
Henry Velazquez was the Owls’ top finisher in the 100 Yard Butterfly with a time of 53.01.

3 Meter Diving
Matheus Silva posted 254.75 to win the 3 Meter event with Jonathon Tressel in third with 187.93.

400 Yard Individual Medley
McAllistar Milne posted a time of 4:09.37 in the 400 Yard IM, followed by Mason Wilde at 4:24.80 for a fourth-place finish.

The Owls will host Worcester Polytechnic Institute at home in the Hutchinson Natatorium on Friday, Nov. 18, 2022 at 6 p.m.
