It was seventh heaven for Grace Hoeper at the Iowa Short Course Championships in late February/early March.
Signed with Indiana and swimming for the Iowa Flyers Swim Club, Hoeper (Class of 2025) won seven individual titles at the meet, setting five personal bests.
Her times in winning the 50 freestyle (22.58), 500 free (4:59.45), 100 backstroke (54.94), 100 butterfly (54.30) and 200 individual medley (2:03.76). She also won the 100 free (50.00) and the 200 free (1:48.73).
Another future power conference collegiate swimmer for the Iowa Flyers Swim Club was the big standout of the men’s meet.
Hayden Hakes, a Class of 2025 swimmer who has signed with Arizona State, won four individual events. He won titles in the 200 free (1:38.34), 100 back (48.62), 200 back (personal best time of 1:46.26) and the 200 IM (personal best time of 1:49.41). Hakes also set a personal best in the 100 back (48.52) while swimming the leadoff leg of the 400 medley relay.
Thanks in large part to the performances of Hoeper and Hakes, the Iowa Flyers Swim Club swept the combined, women’s and men’s team titles.
Other individual standouts were:
- Finn Martin of the Iowa Flyers Swim Club, a member of the 2026 class who has committed to Notre Dame, won the 50 free (20.29) and the 100 free (44.49) in the men’s event. He also was third in the 200 free in a personal best time of 1:40.02.
- Kiefer Roemer of the Iowa Flyers Swim Club, a Class of 2025 swimmer who has signed with Missouri State, won the 100 breast in 53.44, the 200 breast in 1:57.39 and the 200 IM in 1:50.94, all of which were personal best times. His time in the 100 breast ranks fifth in the 17-year-old boys age group, while his time in the 200 breast ranks ninth. He also swam a personal best time of 20.78 in the 50 free, where he finished third.
- Wesley Mooney of the Des Moines Swimming Federation won the 500 free (4:36.88), the 1000 free (9:31.93) and the 1650 free (personal best time of 15:58.92. He also swam a personal best in the 200 fly (1:53.72) to finish second.
- In the women’s competition, 14-year-old Caite Schaffel of the Iowa Flyers Swim Club won the 100 breast (1:02.79) and the 400 IM (4:28.37), while taking third in the 200 IM (personal best time of 2:06.64). Schaffel currently has the eighth-fastest time of the season in the 100 breast in the 14-year-old girls age group.
- Mary Honkamp, a Class of 2026 swimmer for Des Moines Swimming, won the 1000 free (10:20.54) and the 1650 free (17:24.64), both coming in personal best times.
- Sheldon Lamb, a 12-year-old who swims for Cyclone Swim Club, swam a time of 1:58.89 in the 200 back. That time is the second-fastest this season and the 30th fastest all-time in the 11-12 boys age group.
