Building off the success of Cayman Jordan Crooks at the 2022 Short Course World Swimming Championships, where he won his country’s first-ever World Championship title in the 50 free, the CARIFTA swimming region has seen a lot of momentum over the last few months of racing.
CARIFTA includes most Caribbean island nations and the Guiana nations on the Northeastern portion of South America.
Among those nations is Guayana, which is the home nation of swimmer Raekwon Noel. At the recent Republic Anniversary Swim Meet at Guyana’s National Aquatic Center, he secured his qualification for the CARIFTA Championships and broke 7 Guyanese Records.
Noel’s Results:
- 200 free – 1:55.75
- 400 free – 4:11.04
- 800 free – 8:42.12
- 50 fly – 25.76
- 100 fly – 56.35
- 200 fly – 2:07.60
- 400 IM – 4:45.69
Several of the swims also cleared Guyanese or even CARIFTA regional records as well.
Noel now holds 10 Guyanese National Long Course Records in swimming, which is more than any other swimmer. Noel has represented his country internationally at a number of meets in the last two years, including the 2021 Short Course World Championships and the 2022 FINA World Junior Swimming Championships. At World Juniros, he finished 26th in prelims of the 100 fly.
Noel moved to the United States in August 2021 where he attends Highland Regional School and trains with the South Jersey Aquatic Club. Earlier this month, he committed to swim collegiately at Indiana beginning fall 2024.
