In Briefs 05/19/15: Peaty Earns Athlete of the Month, Kazan is on Twitter, and More

Peaty Wins Award…….World record holder Adam Peaty was named the United States Sports Academy’s (USSA) Male Athlete of the month for April. The 20-year old broke the world record in the 100m breaststroke on April 17th during the British Swimming Championships, then went on to also win the 200m breaststroke race.  Peaty also owns the 50m breaststroke work record (26.62) that he earned at the 2014 European Championships.  Peaty is now eligible to be in the running for the USSA’s 2015 Male Athlete of the Year Award.

Australian Paralympic Chef de Mission appointed…….Kate McLoughlin has been appointed as Chef de Mission for the 2016 Australian Paralympic Team. McLoughlin was previously the Deputy Chef de Mission in 2012 and is currently the APC’s General Manager of Paralympic Performance.  Of McLoughlin, APC President Glenn Tasker said, “Kate’s leadership skills, work ethic and proven ability to excel in the unique and challenging environment of a Games makes her the ideal leader of the Australian Team, which is preparing for the first Paralympics to be held in South America.”  For her part, McLoughlin expressed, “The position of Chef de Mission is a huge honor, but also a huge responsibility. To provide our Paralympic athletes with an optimal performance environment, as well as the best overall Games experience, is a core responsibility of the APC which I am absolutely dedicated to achieving.”

Mack-Jackson breaks Florida 200m breaststroke record…….National Training Center’s Benjamin Mack-Jackson set a new Florida Swimming record at the 2015 Memorial Meet in Sarasota this past weekend.  Mack-Jackson clocked a new mark in the boys 11-12 yrs 200m breaststroke with a time of 2:38.08, replacing the previous record of 2:41.35 set by Ian Amistoso back in 2008.

FINA announces nw @finakazan2015 handle…….The world’s swimming governing body, FINA, has launched a new Twitter handle specifically to provide information and updates for the upcoming 2015 World Swimming Championships in Kazan, Russia. The new handle is @finakazan2015.  Since its mid-May inception, the Twitter account has issued updates on the high diving lineup, the progress of the temporary swimming pools at the Kazan Arena Stadium, as well as venue inspections.
