Hubi Kos on Smashing 200 Back Record: “Obviously I wanted to go 33 but… maybe next year”

2025 Men’s NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships

Olympic champion Hubi Kos backed up his gold medal in the 200 back this summer with an NCAA title in the same event, smashing the NCAA record in a 1:34.21. Kos reflects on the work he’s put in this season since Paris and winning NCAA team title with two different teams.

Alumni here, so happy to have my team do well. Incredible meet and incredible young men swimming. Kos’ swims were a highlight, as well as Maurer’s, Hobson’s, and some gutty swims from CJ, WM etc.

I think we’re at a turning point where ‘project’ swimmers that coaches like Eddie used to bring on due to their promise in a 2+ year timeframe are not going to be at the major programs – likely lower D1, D2 or D3 will develop the HS kids for a year or two, then transfer portal will reign. I certainly wish the NCAA could limit the mid-season transfer issue also (which would have affected the Longhorns also…), as this doesn’t seem in the spirit… Read more »

Őszintén szólva, élvezem Kos úr őszinteségét és azt, amit 2025-26-ról mond!
frankly, I enjoy the honesty of Mr. Kos and what he says about 2025-26!
Note: Sorry, but I live with a bunch of Hungarian refugees, so maybe, Kos will appreciate the native comments.

I’m not saying Kos is like Phelps, but MP didn’t get where he did because he wanted to break records by hundredths. People like Marchand don’t go 3:28 or 4:02 on accident, he knew he was capable of something great and he went for it. In 2018 everyone expected Dressel to go 17.9 but he’s said in interviews he knew he was capable of 17.5-6 the whole time. Nothing wrong with barely breaking a record, but the greats go beyond other people’s expectations.

but seeing you’re a fan of Jacoby, I understand why you’d want the bare minimum. Good thing Hubi cares more about records than modeling.

Is it bad that I’d rather Hubi was modeling than Jacoby? Lol.

I’m sorry that was semi-inappropriate. Trying to joke and I apologize.

Biggest news I got from this was Hubi indirectly confirming he plans on coming back.

This just means that either another swimmer from their 2025 recruiting class isn’t going to Austin in the fall or another current member is getting cut and that’s bumming me out

More than having a guy like Kos back?

Feels like he’s done all he needs to SCY, it would be cool to see him go pro and let one of the other guys keep swimming with Texas

Didn’t realize the numbers were that tight, but if that’s the case my guess is Masiuk isn’t coming after all

They lose Carrozza, Hobson, Giuliano, Huckabay. I thought Johnston and Kos would be done and go pro but with them coming back, they lose 4 as far as I’m aware due to being seniors/5th years and gain 5 (McKean, Hammer, Fente-Damers, Fry, and Masiuk) The numbers aren’t looking right.

I would guess Masiuk too, but he just posted a picture recently with Stokowski where he’s holding up the horns

Also lose Sampson(5th) and Borowski(Sr).
That leaves 13 on NCAA team including 3 divers.
Gain 5 listed above plus Nevescanin(diver).
That’s 19.
Who’s coming and Who’s going, Who knows?

Forgot about Sampson, but didn’t mention divers. They lose Borowski and have one diver coming in so that cancels out.

I’ve got McKean, Hammer, Fente-Damers, Fry, and Masiuk as Freshmen. Lucas, Peck, Gould as Sophomores. Modglin, Germonprez, Taylor, Scholtz, Maurer, and Walker as Juniors. Johnston, Branon, Haskal and Kos as Seniors. That’s 18 swimmers + the 4 divers, comes out to 22. I guess my original math was off?
