The Azteks from SDSU took the win from visitors Hawai’i including wins in both sprint freestyle events from sophomore Anika Apostalon.
SDSU took first place in ten events overall, with aforementioned Apostalon winning the 100 free and 200 free in 49.88 and 1:50.03 respectively. Apostalon was also on the pool record setting 200 free relay for SDSU with Chelsea Bailey, Taylor Johnson, and Natilee Ruiz. The quartet posted a 1:33.08, besting the previous pool record by 1.7 seconds – the 8th fastest time in SDSU history.
The top three spots in the 50 free belonged to SDSU. Chelsea Baily took the top spot swimming a 23.28. Bailey was backed up in the by Maddy Delcamo in 2nd place with a 23.68, and Taylor Johnson in 3rd swimming a 24.00.
Of the other Aztek winners, four posted swims that ranked in the top-10 overall times at the SDSU facility. Bailey with her 23.28 in the 50 free, Summer Harrison in the 100 fly with a 55.99, Emilee Campbell with a first place 2:21.67 in the 200 breast, and Ruiz with a winning time of 57.23 in the 100 back.
Hawai’i dominated the distance freestyle events, sweeping the top three positions in both. The trio of Kira Webster (10:15.19), Dana Michaels (10:23.41), and Kira Makuta (10:28.81) started things off for Hawai’i in the 1,000 freestyle. Webster then posted a repeat win in the 500 free by swimming a 4:57.71. She was backed by Makuta in 2nd (5:10.01) and Natalie Matsuyama in 3rd (5:21.65)
Not yet done, Hawai’i also took the top three spots in the 200 IM, and the 100 butterfly. The 200 IM was lead by Sophie Allin, who posted a 2:11.60. Allin was followed by Katie Seaton in 2:15.42, and Kristen Bennett in 2:17.78. The 100 butterfly was won by Erin McNulty who swam a 56.77. Sofija Djelic took 2nd, posting a 58.30, and Morgan Mark then completed the top-three sweep with a 58.63.
SDSU was victorious in 1-meter diving, as sophomore Isabelle Choquehuanca scored 285.9 points, followed by Alexandra Caplan, also from SDSU, in 2nd with 266.70 points. Hawai’I took the top spot in the 3 meter event, however, with Lauren Hall posting 314.25 points, followed by Isabelle Choquehuanca from SDSU with 297.08 points.
The relays were split amongst the Azteks and the Rainbow Wahini. SDSU won the opening 200 yard medley relay, with the quartet of Bailey, Laura Day, Samantha Guttmacher, and Delcamo posting a 1:45.14. Hawai’I then took the final event of the evening with Jasmine Alkhaldi, Franziska Weidner, Taylor Thorsen, and Morgan Mark winning the 200 free relay in 1:35.60
Hawai’i have a month before they return to the pool at the Arena Invitational in Monterey Park, CA. SDSU, already 7-0 on the year after winning both a quad meet and a triangular, will head to Fort Collin’s CO on November 1st to face off against CSU and Idaho.
