Hosszu, Le Clos Win European Leg of FINA World Cup Series

Two prior winners of the overall World Cup Series, Chad le Clos from South Africa and Katinka Hosszu from Hungary, have cashed in big, each winning $40,000 prizes for winning this European leg of the World Cup, and taking a huge lead toward the $100,000 overall series prizes.

Hungary’s Daniel Gyurta received honors for the best men’s swim in Berlin, the meet’s second stop, with his 200 breaststroke. Hosszu received the same honor on the women’s side of the pool.

These $40,000 bonus checks bring Hosszu already to $114,000 in winnings, including $60,000 for World Records, and le Clos to $57,500, including a $10,000 World Record bonus. With this new format, the world’s elite swimmers are finally recognizing the potential for financial windfalls during a time of year where there’s not much of importance going on in the world’s swimming schedule.

The total European bonuses paid out:

Chad le Clos – $40,000
Vlad Morozov – $25,000
Daniel Gyurta – $15,000
Roland Schoeman – $8,000
Conor Dwyer – $7,000
Kenneth To – $5,000

Katinka Hosszu – $40,000
Mireia Belmonte – $25,000
Ranomi Kromowidjojo – $15,000
Lauren Boyle – $8,000
Emily Seebohm – $7,000
Jeanette Ottesen – $5,000

As a reminder of how the points and cash work, see this list post.

R in the table refers to “Race” points, aka points earned for medaling in an event. P refers to “Performance” points, which are the bonus points earned for World Records or having the best three times of a meet.
