Johanna Holloway (Moss Farms Diving) and Grayson Campbell (Longhorn Aquatics) collected semifinal victories at McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion on the campus of the Ohio State University Wednesday afternoon, as the 2017 USA Diving National Championships held its tenth day of competition. Holloway placed first in the women’s 10-meter semifinal, while Campbell won the men’s 3-meter semifinal. Olympic champion Laura Wilkinson (Woodlands Diving Academy) also advanced to the women’s platform final in her first major competition since coming out of retirement back in March of this year.
Holloway etched a top mark of 264.95 for first, totaling three dives of 54.00 or more points. She capitalized on an inward 3½ somersault tuck worth 60.80 points, her highest-scoring dive. Holloway’s semifinal performance proved to be even more impressive after she finished seventh in the quarterfinal with a score of 241.10. Olivia Rosendahl (Unattached) claimed the second seed with 263.35 points and Alexis Vincent (Purdue University) came in third with 257.60 points.
Wilkinson, the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games platform gold medalist, racked up 239.65 points in the semifinal for a seventh-place finish. Wilkinson still qualified for the final despite missing her opening dive, an armstand back 2 somersault 1½ twist free, in which a double balk was assessed, resulting as a failed dive and a score of 0.00. The 2005 FINA World Championships platform gold medalist, and mother of three, responded with four straight dives of 57.00 or more points, including a back 3½ somersault tuck that earned 64.35 points.
Wilkinson produced a first-place finish in the quarterfinal earlier in the day with a total of 292.30. She amassed 52.80 points on the same dive she would later fail in the semifinal.
Grayson Campbell (Longhorn Aquatics) will be the top seed in the men’s 3-meter final after constructing a score of 385.85 in the semifinal. Campbell opened with 74.40 points on a forward 3½ somersault pike. The peak of his semifinal came in round five when he lit up the scoreboard for 75.25 points on a reverse 1½ somersault 3½ twist free.
Joey Cifelli (Purdue University) came in second in the semifinal with 368.90 points after finishing 16th in the quarterfinal. Greg Duncan (Dominion Dive Club) took third in the semifinal, scoring 366.10 points.
